Is its usage permissible? I'm writing an essay that's supposed to be humorous, and I wanted to use the word in a humorous fashion on its own. I can't really think of any other wording that would have the same effect.

I think in certain cases, “damn” is permissible-- I remember reading a very funny UPenn essay that quoted a man saying “Move your ass.” It depends on the context; if it’s not offensive (or tastefully so :)), it should be fine. It never hurts to be safe though.

lol this is a very good question - depends on how you use the word. I remember one year Harvard asked “what’s the bravest thing you’ve done in your life?” and a student submitted an essay with two words: “**** you.” and he got into Harvard.
Just be appropriate - or else extremely creative and bold like that student.

I think you should goddamn well use it.

To uuuujjjj: Yeeaaahhhh!

I also remember reading somewhere on CC that one time, MIT asked their applicants, “What is bravery?”, and this guy only wrote three words at the bottom: “This is bravery.” Voila! He got in. Of course he must’ve been highly qualified and competitive in the first place, but if I was an admissions officer, I’d surely welcome the breath of fresh air, unless, of course everyone reading CC suddenly decides to do the same.
