The yin and yang of living a long time…

The yin and yang of living a long time…I’m now eligible for Silver Sneakers - that’s full gym membership at almost every gym in the nation. Will I be taking advantage of this program? You bet! I’m one of the few people I know that likes the gym.

What wonderful discoveries have you found?

Last week I watched a movie courtesy of AARP - they have several online programs that I find very interesting!

You are not old enough: until 2017 the senior lifetime pass was only $10 instead of $80

My husband is older. He got it before the price went up.

$80! Went and picked mine up 2 weeks ago - I was able to turn in 2 annual expired passes and got $40 credit ($20 per expired pass!).

I got mine at $10 also in 2015. Bought it the first weekend we moved to San Diego at the Cabrillo National Monument gatehouse. Boy, have I gotten my money’s worth just there alone!

My husband bragged about the $10 pass. Alas, after it got lot the replacement was $80. Still a great deal. We usually use it at Rocky Moutain National Park (an easy day trip for us). But last week we used it on Cape Cod, Nausset Beach.

My wife also has the national parks lifetime pass. I get in for free as long as I go with her.

I discovered another surprise: The pass to sail at MIT that I filled out during my freshman year there is still valid! They still have my original card on file from when I first arrived on campus in 1969. I went sailing with my daughter two weeks ago while we were there for a reunion. They showed me that they still have a pass on file from 1937, but I doubt that any students who were freshman in 1937 are still sailing.

REI had my membership that I hadn’t used in almost 40 years…not a problem at all! Just needed to change the name because I got married. But they don’t have a senior discount!

That is one membership that IIRC has stayed the same price for a long time - it was $20 when I first visited REI in 1997.

How did that work, @justamom? We have one that expires this fall, though I turned 62 last winter. Am wondering if we can do that at a NP entrance (our dentist is right near an entrance to Shenandoah, two hours from us, so when we go see her, we head to the park afterwards and make a day trip out of it).

We have about 4 or more Golden age national park passes 3 @$10 each — often forgot to pack, and 1 free because it was for medical disability. We are better about remembering to pack them these days. Haha!

Ross has 10% discount for people over 55? on Tuesdays.

The UPS Store gives a 5% discount to those with an AARP card. Not a big deal, to be sure, but I use it everytime I need to ship something.

Thanks - did not know that. My husband is AARP member. Just learned that I can get same deal (5% off shipping, 15% of other) with my AAA card. Now 5% is not a big deal, but it would have added up for the hundreds of dollars I’ve spent there/

The card has to be expired in order to be turned in for credit. So if it’s expired you take it with you to purchase the new pass, and turn it in. The person that was helping me didn’t know about the credit for expired cards, so I had to show them on their website and they had to get a supervisor, who said “of course” and credited it right away.
