So, I didn’t realize that Amherst had a co-op dorm until recently…I really like the idea of living in a community like that, but I haven’t been able to find much information about it.

Any current Amherst students live in or know people who live in Humphries? I’d love to know what it’s like and how difficult it is to get in.

A number of my friends lived in the Zu and loved it. As best I understand it, all meals and chores are delegated out to members of the house. You are assigned a cooking group for the semester and prepare a meal for the entire house once every two weeks. All weekday dinners (Sunday-Thursday, maybe?) are all-house meals. Residents prepare their own breakfast and lunch. All meals also accommodate dietary restrictions (including vegan/vegetarian, lactose-free, etc.).

Residence in the Zu is by lottery every spring. Non-Zu members may attend dinners as guests of current residents (there also seems to be an “honorary Zu member” system every year, but I’m not sure how one gets included in that). I’d encourage you to attend one or more dinners at the Zu before you submit an application for the lottery. Residential Life will notify you of the lottery deadline. It is pretty tough to get in, and there may be some kind of preference for students who have demonstrated interest in and commitment to the house in advance. Get in touch with the Zu early (you can easily find out who the Zu RC is and ask him/her) and establish yourself and your interest!
