Theater at Northwestern

I just read about another Tony award winner graduated from NU -- Denis O'Hare.

<a href="http://www.alumni.northwestern.edu/education/ohare_conversation.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.alumni.northwestern.edu/education/ohare_conversation.html</a></p>

So we know NU alums won at the Tony at least two years in a row (2003/2004). I wonder if there were many more before 2003 since I am not familiar with the field.

<a href="http://tbird.ugadm.northwestern.edu/transfer/facts/alumni.htm%5B/url%5D">http://tbird.ugadm.northwestern.edu/transfer/facts/alumni.htm</a> 3 people (if I counted correctly) are described as "Tony Award Winning", many are described as Tony Award nominated, and I know at least one other on the list won a Tony even though it isn't mentioned there.

Just wondering, julz, did you apply to the School of Communication as a theatre major, or are you planning to do tech on the side?

Tech on the side, I'm plannin on goin pre-med actually (completely different eh?)
Is it still possible to be well-involved in this case? Or is the theatre only limited to people that want to major in some aspect of it?

You can participate in student produced shows (and there are tons) no matter what your major is. I think you just won't be able to do mainstage productions.

Is it true that there are something like 300-500 drama majors? sheesh...

On the subject of NHSI, I also attended the program (with Franklinbrown and Crypticism :)), and adored it...I also attended the musical theatre extention, which was equally amazing, so if you have any questions on that, let me know! We also saw a musical at NU while in the extention, and it was pretty well done...excellent voices and acting, but as we are musical theatre kids, we were able to find some nit-picky flaws (alot of stereotypical "musical theatre" sort of stuff in the show...like reach up and grasp the air in passion!...but for the most part, it was a great show.)

DizzyDani...did you go to CAP 21 this past summer? I think you and KM made that connection on another post, but I'm not completely sure. I'm sure you can figure out who I am based on my name. I researched NUs theater program extensively, and found that it had exactly what I was looking for. I went on a tour of the department about a month ago, and may be able to answer any more specific questions you have. PM me, or just reply here.

bump!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DizzyDani88, I'm visiting Northwestern at the end of the month to check our their theatre program, among other things. I'll let you know if I learn anything significant.

thanks a lot mockery ;)

Is the high number of theatre majors a negative?

it can be, because of the high level of competition, but competition is a fact of life in the theatre world, so it's a pretty realistic set-up. Also, all acting class sizes are very small, so the large number of people does not affect class size. And one big plus to the large numbers:

Each year, 100 new NU theatre majors are sent out into NYC, LA, and Chicago...and that makes for one hell of an alumni network. They're not called the "Northwestern Mafia" for nothing. ;)

I've heard that after your freshman year you have to choose which acting "studio" you want to be in and that this can limit you if you change you mind about your focus within the next three years. Does anyone know anything else about this system?

They are not acting "studios" per se, but different teachers. At the end of your freshman year, you observe classes with various acting teachers, then choose your top three or so...most people get their first choice, but since the classes are so small, not everyone can get who they want. You study with this teacher in this group for the next 3 years (however, if you really aren't happy with who you ended up with, you can usually switch). If you change your mind and decide not to pursue theatre, it's easy enough to switch into WCAS, it's usually not a problem.

On the website it says to direct all correspondence to the office of undergrad admission. Does this apply to resumes as well?

I believe so...I just included my resume in the "supplemental information" section of my application.

_________thanks!

Yep, resumes go there too!

If rejected is it possible to transfer into the theater program later on?
