dramamom, Congrats! So very exciting!!!

Today I received a letter from Viterbo. I figured it was a generic letter thanking me for my audition (Dec. 7th). Then, I started to sweat. It was a thin letter. Only one piece of paper. I thought, “Oh no. College confidential warned me about these thin letters.” Since Viterbo said that the ONLY notifications they would be sending out prior to March would be early rejections, I figured since it was a thin letter, this was my early rejection. LO AND BEHOLD, IT WAS MY EARLY ACCEPTANCE INTO THE BFA ACTING PROGRAM! Best.Christmas.present.ever.

Here comes my question for you…
The letter stated that I need to reject or accept the offer by January 15th. But, I have 4 more schools to audition for and a few that are higher up on my “favorite” list. Do I email Rick Walters and tell him that I’m accepting for now, but I still have 4 more auditions, and I will re-confirm the acceptance or reject it come March/April? I can’t reject it because what if I don’t get accepted anywhere else? And I can’t officially accept it because there are still other schools in the picture.
Thanks for any help!

that is tough. i will defer to the veterans but congrats on the acceptance.

nomester7, was this an Early Decision (binding) from Viterbo? Did they state beforehand that if you auditioned early on you would have to accept by January 15?

If not they are behaving against the National College Response Day principles: Most colleges belong to the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC). I quote from the website: "One main function of this organization is to assure that colleges institute procedures that are in the best interests of students. To that end, this organization has constructed a “Statement of Principles of Good Practice.”

"All NACAC members agree to abide by the rules in this Statement. A major tenet of this Statement includes a provision for the National Candidates’ Reply Date. “College and University Members agree that they will permit first-year candidates for fall admission to choose, without penalty, among offers of admission and financial aid until May 1. It is understood that May 1 will be viewed as the postmark date. Candidates admitted under an early decision program are a recognized exception to this provision.” (NACAC Statement of Principles of Good Practice, II, B, 3.

This is not a legal date, but it is a best practices date. I don’t know if this situation applies to Viterbo, but I put this out there in case it does.

If the colleges break this practice they are behaving unlike most colleges in the nation, and they have only one reason to do so: they feel they can’t compete with other colleges on a level playing ground.

Infer what you like from this fact.

Personally, I’d email them and explain that you are thrilled with the acceptance - say something personal and nice - but you still have some auditions left and so cannot make a decision before their Jan. 15 deadline. Furthermore, you might have financial aid packages to consider. Ask if they’d agree to extend the deadline and see what they say. Their response will tell you a lot about them.

I noticed on the Viterbo MT page that last year they asked a student accepted after a spring audition to give them an answer by April 15. Looks like this school makes a habit of trying to get kids to commit before the traditional May 1st date.

I’d call and ask for an extension. This happened to my daughter with a non-NACAC conservatory (for music) and they granted her an extension when she requested it. They asked her to let them know ASAP, rather than waiting until the very end, which she did.

@Connections, I do not recall reading anything about auditioning early and therefore accepting early. They said they would be sending out letters in March, and the only exception would be if the KNEW they would be rejecting you, they might send an early rejection. So I’m assuming I’m a very large exception to their process. I understand from it that they really want me.

I will email Rick Walters and explain the situation.
Like my dad said, “It’s a free country, why couldn’t you change your mind?” I’m hoping they’ll allow an extension and hold my place for the time being. What my family and I are gathering is, they want to know if I’m interested, but if I’m rejecting they want to open the spot up ASAP for when they make final decisions in March.

Caribbound’s D accepted at Azusa Pacific and Palm Beach Atlantic, Acting for Film.

Sending in audition for Azusa’s BFA but not expecting to be one of the 12-14 chosen and not sure if it would be best route. Biggest question will be financing. Undecided where to apply locally as a finance based back-up since nothing local would be Acting for Film, just Theatre majors.

nomester7, keep us posted. Good luck with this–I’m hoping they’ll offer you the extension, as happened to glassharmonica’s D. It may be a free country, but some colleges will pressure you to accept early. It is definitely a good sign that they want you so much!

carribound, we had a chance to visit Azusa and my kid LOVED it. Sad he’s decided against it but we live on ECoast and he decided it was too far away from home to start. but great student community and we’ve met one alum close to home and the mom of another current student. The alum regrets not starting there(she was a transfer) and the other kid(also out of state loves it there too). Kid really liked theatre dept in particular. is yours going for the BFA? actually, ur note indicates yes. it is a smaller school so I am guessing it is easier to get into the BFA then USC or FSU. Feel free to post messages on my page or pm if you want to talk more. I know a fair amount about the program due to visit, emails, and phone calls with aPU. out of the cali schools, that’s the only one he ended up applying to although he liked LMU a lot too and certainly had a deep respect and interest in USC as well.

Rick Walters gladly offered me an extension until April 1st- which is when they are asking all other students to make their decision by. He was very understanding of my situation. Phew! That’s a relief!
Congrats to caribbound’s D!

Excellente!!! Keep knocking them dead nomester!!!

So I’m still here…reading everything…working with S and his drama teacher on monologues…trying to make sure nothing is falling through the cracks.

And this is not an acceptance, but a question. Pace has offered son about 1/2 OOS tuition plus expenses, even before receiving his audition disc…it will be sent this week. Then we are hoping to be able to squeeze in auditions when we are in NY. Is this usual? Son is happy…as are we…but wondering if it is just status quo.

Congrats to everyone with an early acceptance! This is exciting!

MsMommy-- my guess is that the merit aid offer is based totally on grades and statistics and won’t help him in the audition dept. But if he gets into the BFA it will be a very nice help!
