Dear 3in college, thanks so much for your post regarding Berkeley--that is important info and makes sense given the super academic "pre-X" emphasis at Berkeley. I think it is a good program mainly for people who are sure they want an MFA as a lot of their graduates go on to advanced degrees. Not really a 'conservatory-esq' type of program.
Re: your son's situation, I hope things work out soon and he gets the fat envelope. However, there is a good thread in the musical theatre section of CC. It is called: "I Didn't Get Into any musical theater programs. Now what? What does one do?" It has lots of good ideas. The address directly is: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=149237 or you can just find it under "college majors"--musical theater thread. Best of luck.

Dear Soozievt: Thanks a lot for that suggestion. I did contact Alwaysamom and she was wonderfully helpful. What a lovely community we have here! We are leaning toward NYU although we are both in sticker shock especially my husband. I guess retirement at a decent age is out of the question now. Well maybe our D will make it big and buy us a house in the Bahamas! She certainly won't be able to as a waitress. Oh well! LOL!!

Dear Miahana, I also got into Atlantic for next year and would love to hear what Alwaysamom said about it...thanks. I'm also looking at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Northwestern.

Greetings! I have been reading this thread and the MT thread since my d decided to audition for MT and drama at various schools. The information has always been very helpful and I thank all participants for their valuable input, esp. soozievt and alwaysamom.

I need some advice. D has just been notified she was accepted at Lee Strasberg Institute-her second choice at Tisch. I am hoping members can tell me more about the real reputation of this program and whether d will have the opportunity to continue her singing there. - Given the cost I want to make sure my d makes an informed decision.

FriendlyMommy...congrats to your daughter on her acceptance. I gather from your post that your D is interested in musical theater as you mention singing. First, I don't know what other acceptances she has in hand. She may wish to weigh if she wants to do a BFA acting studio at Tisch vs. a possible acceptance into a BFA in MT program, but you don't say. So, that would be a big decision.

Just talking of the Tisch element and her studio, I would urge her to contact Tisch and ask if there are any Strasberg students or faculty with whom she could speak. That would be direct help on those perspectives with specific questions. Is your D going to Saturday in the Square? At that event, they have student reps from every single studio and they divide up and admitted students can talk with the current students.

I know that Strasberg's curriculum offers some singing, but it won't be as much as in CAP21, but more than in some straight acting studios. There are many MT kids in Strasberg. Also, Strasberg puts on some musicals. Right now, my D, who attends CAP21, is in a musical at Strasberg studio open to Tisch students from all studios (and the cast is mixed that way). The director, in fact, is a vocal teacher in Strasberg (thus they do teach singing, and I have seen it in their curriculum). I also believe your D could sign up for private voice as an elective (two credits). She could audition for Mainstage musicals and GAP musicals (student run). The studio curriculum includes some dance like jazz and tap. There are ways to keep getting voice and dance training but it won't be like attending a MT program itself. It may be enough to her, I do not know. If you go to the Tisch website and click on each studio, you can get their curriculum.

As far as reputation, I think all Tisch drama studios have very good reputations. I also think your D should examine the acting approach (Method Acting) at Strasberg and see if it is one she would be comfortable with. Again, there are many students in Strasberg with MT backgrounds. The program has some song and dance but is not a MT program itself. She won't be giving it up but she also won't be in a BFA in MT program. It may not matter as long as she trains. That would be her decision and I don't know her other options.

PS: In case you have not seen it, here is the webpage that describes Strasberg Studio through Tisch:
http://drama.tisch.nyu.edu/object/DR_Strasberg.html

Here is the page with the curriculum for NYU students who train at Strasberg:
http://drama.tisch.nyu.edu/object/DR_Strasberg_2.html

Does anyone have any information about Calarts theater program? i would appreciate any feedback at all. Thanks!

Thanks, soozievt for your reply. My d has great options but believes NYU is the only place for her. We had done a tremendous amount of research on CAP21 ( in part based on info you provided) but know little, other than what is available on Wickipedia, NYU and LSI, about the Lee Strasberg Institute. I don't want her to base her decision on any romantic notion about NYU, but rather on the merits of the program. My d is an international student and we were advised by admissions and Tisch that international students didn't get invited to S in the Square - so I am reaching out to those that know about the program to provide some advice. Thanks again.

Since she can't attend Sat. in the Square, do contact Tisch and/or Strasberg and ask if your D can connect via e mail with current students and some faculty in Strasberg and ask her specific questions. Hopefully, she can talk to students in Strasberg who also are involved in Musical Theater, as quite a number of them are. That's what I suggest she does, which is what she could have done at Sat. in the Square but can be just as effective via email or phone.

Also, you may wish to post on the NYU/Tisch sub forum which you can find at the top of the Musical Theater forum. I know there is one mom who has a D in Strasberg (might be a soph or junior), though she doesn't post much and so I don't know if she'll see it but it is worth a try as well. Still, talking to actual current students and teachers would be better.

Lastly, while it is important that your D be happy with Strasberg, she can switch studios after two years and do another approach or emphasis in another Tisch studio.

got into tisch etw for the summer :) anyone know what the deal is with the 6 credits you earn-- are they only applicable at nyu or do they transfer to other colleges?

Does anyone know the rank as far as selectivity for studios at NYU Tisch? I have been admitted into the Lee Strasberg studio and I was wondering if anyone knew how many were admitted to that specific studio, especially in comparison to other studios. Thanks

AKactor, I have never heard of the studios at Tisch being "ranked" in terms of selectivity. The sizes of the studio vary but I don't think that means the smaller studios are more selective. What Tisch does is to place each incoming student into the studio where they believe the student best fits. The size of the studio is not a reflection as to its selectivity. For instance, CAP21 has a lower acceptance rate (MT) than the acting studios, but the studio is a larger one than some. Anyway, my suggestion is to call Tisch and/or Strasberg Institute, and simply ask the size of the program (students per grade) for that studio. Rest assured, even in larger studios, the students are broken into sections for class. For instance, in my daughter's studio (and I think this is typical of other studios), they break the larger class into smaller classes of about 17 students (might be smaller). The difference between the studios is more to do with approach/philosophy and curriculum, not selectivity. The size in a classroom (vs. the size of the freshman class as a whole) is on the small side no matter which studio you are placed in.

I CANT DECIDE!!!! I have narrowed it down to CCM Drama and NYU. I have been offered a great scholarship to CCM but NYU has the prestige. I need help. I have heard very little about CCM Drama.

AKactor, is there a way you can go visit both schools and perhaps sit in on a class or two? (Maybe you have already done that.) Some kids have very strong, visceral reactions to places when they do that. I know one girl who dreamt her whole life of attending Harvard, and felt it was completely wrong for her within minutes of stepping onto campus. She had the opposite reaction at Washington University in St. Louis. Also, have you discussed the whole "cost of tuition" thing with your parents? It sounds as if you got some $$$ to help defray the cost of CCM, but you didn't mention anything similar with NYU. If cost is an object, that's something to think about. Also, you might want to find out if CCM straight drama students undergo the same cut system as do their MT counterparts, and factor that into the mix. If you were my kid, I would tell you that prestige is certainly nice, but in the long run, the fit of the school to you is what will end up being most important. Congrats on having these excellent choices.

I can't seen]m to get to Part 10. Can anyone help? I am trying to find out if there is a drama/theatre arts program out there that also lets a student study music. HELP!

If you click on page 1 of the Theater/Drama Part 10, it will take you to post #1 of Part 10. In that post are links to all of the Parts 1-9 so you can go back to the very beginning. I've read it all and don't recall there being much discussion about your question.

What type of music do you want to study (vocal, instrumental)?? Are you thinking of studying theatre/drama in a BFA program?

Hello, My daughter is on the waitlist for the MT program at Pace but yesterday we received a letter inviting her to be in the Theater arts BA program with an emphasis in acting. We have strayed away from BA vs Bfa because she likes a lot of hands on studio work vs too much class room. Does anyone know if a BA Theater Arts major at Pace can take a lot of voice and dance electives? she needs DANCE in her program. Also ...if you get invited to a different program (BA) while you are waitlisted (Bfa),does that mean there is no way you are getting into the Bfa? Help!

My S has been turned down at a couple of schools. He still has not heard from Rutgers. I called last week and they hadn't received his test scores (don't know why), so I priorty send them through the internet. Hopefully he will hear this week.

we went to calarts with my D...it was a very artsy open minded enviroment...almost too open minded in it's aproach to theater. We are more traditional in thinking. If you are very creative and enjoy very personalized artistic expression like scripts getting changed and dream like abstract theater approach ...good choice is calarts. everything is in one building. near L.A but also a bit out of the way...near strip malls and stuff like that.

I am new at this musical theatre - BFA stuff - but my son seems to be headed in that direction. I am shocked at reading about cuts in programs. i thought once you were admitted and "in" that was it. Just how common is this anyway?
