My son is interested in being a double major. theater /psych .Is that an option at haverford? Any other suggestions for schools is appreciated.
Thank you

My D is aslo interested is also interested in theatre with a possible double major. From my understanding, Haverford does not have a theatre program. Students cross enroll at Bryn Mawr. Are there any Haverford students who can speak to how this has worked for them?

class of 2012 here, so I can't speak from direct experience...but I believe theater is at Bryn Mawr (I don't think this should deter you, Bryn Mawr is .5 miles away from Haverford and 90% of fords take classes at Bryn Mawr)

Here is a copy of all of the theater classes at Bryn Mawr:

150 Introduction to Theater
An exploration of a wide range of dramatic works and history of theater through research, analysis and discussion to develop understanding and foundations for a theatrical production. (Iwasaki, Division III)

250 20th-C Theories of Acting
An introduction to 20th-century theories of acting emphasizing the intellectual, aesthetic and sociopolitical factors surrounding the emergence of each director

Thank you for your very helpful response! This may seem like a silly question, but if all of the theatre offerings are at Bryn Mawr why -- if you are interested in majoring or joint-majoring in theatre -- would you be based at Haverford? Are the social sciences or English departments stronger?

hmm, I would assume that the english/social sciences are very strong at both colleges. but they may split the courses. for example, haverford may cover modern literature and bryn mawr more classic stuff (i have no idea if this actually the case). i know the bio departments do this...haverford focuses more on molecular level stuff while Bryn Mawr focuses on macro.

i'm not sure if i understand what you mean by "based at haverford." you would probably sleep at haverford but you may end up eating at bryn mawr a lot of the times (as would any other student at Haverford)

just another advantage of going to a school in a consortium! there are SO many resources/classes available, but every night you go home to a really insular, tight knit campus.

studiomom: The OP's child is a son. Can't be based at Bryn Mawr.

Theater was OK but BMC in 2008-2009 is renovating Goodhart Theater into a modern theater space which will be fantastic for students. If you check out BMC's website, I think the plans are there. HC was suppose to build a black box theater this summer so that's something new and there will eventually be a new arts center on campus (new galleries, theater, ect...) but that won't happen for another several years.

My daughter, who will soon be entering her junior year, is a History major and Theater (at BMC) minor. There is no available theater major at either school. In addition to the BMC offerings, she does plan to take upper level courses at Swarthmore. Her theater experience has included not only her academic courses, but, also, her involvement in an improv troupe and an a capella group. This past spring, she also produced and directed a play on campus. There are certainly many theater opportunities at H'ford, but one has to search for them.

I know that BMC students who are interested in pursuing theatre as a major can do via an independent major. My D is considering this. She'll be a sophmore and has taken BMC theatre courses and is enrolled in a theatre course at Swarthmore in the fall. She was in two main stage productions at BMC last year. My impression is that there are definitely performance opportunities for students at Haverford, BMC, and Swarthmore.
