I'm a junior in high school and I've heard that Northwestern used to have a very good theater program. Is the program still just as strong? I am an aspiring costume designer, so is NU a good school to prepare me for the world of costume designing?

Change “used to” to “still has” and “a very good” to “one of the best” and you heard right.

NU’s theater program is one of the best. My D absolutely loves it. I know that many of the kids in the program are interested in various aspects of theater – from directing to producing etc. However, I do not know anything about costume design. She does not come home from school until June so I can’t ask her. Is the website any help? I remember hearing that there are about 60 shows a year on campus (both student run and mainstage shows) so there would be alot of opportunity to costume! I know that my D did costumes for a tech credit and for another mainstage show and enjoyed it.

Thanks for your help. I’ll look into their program more. Hopefully I can tour the campus this summer and talk to some people there.

When we visited Northwestern we toured the costume shop (sorry, I know there’s a better name for it but I don’t remember it) and it was large, light-filled, busy, and appeared to have state of the art equipment. I remember being in other college costume areas that were not as nice, for what it’s worth.

We also saw a show that had the most fabulous costumes made entirely at the college by students. They were so outstanding, very impressive. I can’t imagine not getting a quality education in this area.

We just came back from a visit to NU. Our DD is a sophomore theater major. She took us on a tour of the school campus-including the costume shop. It is HUGE-lots of tables, sewing machines, equipment, storage. Building configuration is such that there is lots of natural light. There are always several plays going on, so lots of opportunities to work!
BTW the theater program is tough to get into for a reason-it is considered by many in the business to be at the top or in the top tier.

Thank you so much for your help. Northwestern seeems like a great school.
