Not to be a downer, but my auditions must have been horrendous! Wow. I did get accepted to a great, completely non-theater-related liberal arts school, but a gap year is looking better than ever right now.

Gwen Fairfax, thank you. I was feeling a bit down when I posted that (well, duh) and reading it now I realize just how unlike me it was to say. I’ve always believed that things can work out no matter what. The fact that things are actually happening now shouldn’t change that.

P.S. I love your name as well! Big Ernest fan here. (Edit: or is that Earnest?)

Thank you Bogface, yes I (obviously) love Earnest too. As Gwendolyn says, she never travels without her diary, because “One should always have something sensational to read on the train.” I expect your diary will make pretty good reading too, whether you go off to Vassar like Meryl Streep or not! :-)

Hah, I suspect my diary would aggravate anyone not partial to constant waffling and indecision! But I’ll take the compliment. :)

Officially shut out from conservatory! Wow… I never, ever considered this possibility a year ago. So my options are gap year, Vassar, Haverford (which has next to no theater department), and on the off-chance that I get in, Princeton. Weird!

Bogface, while it is unfortunate you did not get into a conservatory, if that is what you prefer, I do believe your outcome with respect to conservatories is one that is very realistic. While I don’t know much about you at all, you obviously are a very strong student (you did get into Vassar after all!) and I am sure very talented. I’m speaking up more as a cautionary tale for others who have not yet applied.

Your list of conservatories were the tippy top ones in the country. The odds at each of those handful of conservatories are so slim even for the most talented kids in the country, that it is very likely to end up rejected at them all. If you REALLY want a conservatory, you would need a more balanced list of odds. It need not be “tippy top BFA or bust”. For example, highly competitive programs, that are not the very tippy top like you applied to, if added to your list, may have yielded you BFA options…such as Syracuse, Emerson, Miami, CCM, Evansville, UMichigan. Most of your BA schools are also of the most selective variety as well, and thus very chancy as a whole. There are schools just a tiny notch down from that where you may have also had more options if you had applied.

I imagine you do not feel you must have a conservatory as you applied to a number of BA schools and not as safeties either. So, you already have two very good BA schools, one that is particularly strong in theater (Vassar). So, your outcome is really a realistic one given the odds.

I think if anyone else also only applied to the tippy top BFA programs and the most selective BAs, their outcome might typically be like yours. The way to change that outcome is not for YOU to be any better than you already are but to have a list of BFA schools and BA schools that have a range of odds. That doesn’t mean compromising your education. There are very very selective BFAs and BAs that are not the very tippy top with very very low odds, and are considered REALLY fine conservatories and colleges. The list is the issue, not you, in other words. My feeling is you could have had conservatory options had you had a more balanced list of odds. Again, my sharing this is not so much directed at you, but more toward others who are reading along. I’d be VERY nervous if I had a top academic child with top artistic talent who only applied to colleges that accept less than 20% academically or less than 9% artistically. The odds of being left with few or no options are really strong with such a list. This is a reflection of the odds, not of you or anyone else who is very strong either academically and/or artistically. One must realistically assess the odds and plan a balanced list of colleges.

I am so happy for you that you do have Vassar and it seems you were/are willing to attend a BA as you even have Princeton on the list which is surely not a back up option! So, things are working out well considering your college list. If you wanted a BFA more, then you’d need more of them on the list and a range of odds, not just the ones that take like 5% (or less) of those who audition, and attract the strongest talent pool of auditionees.

Good luck with Princeton but I do think Vassar is a terrific option!!

Vassar is phenomenal!!

Grass is always greener, my daughter wanted Vassar and got conservatories. Agree with SDONCC , v is great, go visit again, ask lots of questions, and never give up…
