I am thinking of adding a couple theater schools that do musicals to the list, any help? (Mainly east coast)
I know that Dartmouth offers a theater degree but does at least one musical a year. (It’s not a famous theater program, but we’ve got a few pretty great alumni – Buck Henry, Connie Britton, Mindy Kahling, Rachel Dratch.) I would guess that most of the BA programs do musicals, but I don’t know for sure. http://theater.dartmouth.edu/
I found that many schools do musicals- with or without a specific MT major. (as jkelly said- esp BA programs)
My daughter’s school (Adelphi University) also does musicals. Last year she was cast in a main stage musical that was amazing. It was a fabulous opportunity for the kids because it was a new musical that was written by an award winning playwright and was being workshopped there and they had the chance to be a part of the entire process of seeing a show come to life and were working with a Broadway musical director, choreographer and lyricist. I know that they are doing another musical this year as well.
@ella411 Thank you. We live on the island and dont have Adelphi on the list bc no MT, so that’s great to know. Are you from LI also, if so does she dorm there and how does she like it? Sorry lots of questions lol!!! Would there be voice & dance available?
Yes I do live on Long Island, which worked out great that I was able to go see (almost) all of her performances last year. I know that Adelphi doesn’t do musicals every year, but since she has been there they did one last year. The year before when she was a freshman, she was in the freshman showcase which actually was a musical (freshman can’t audition for the theater department shows, just the showcase and directing scenes.) Like I mentioned earlier they are doing a musical this spring as well.
My daughter has lived in the dorms the last two years. She absolutely loves it there (although the food isn’t the greatest, but it’s okay, and she’s quite picky.) The campus is quite pretty, and the performing arts center is state of the art. It works out nicely living somewhat close (we’re about 45 minutes away) because she was able to come home when she wanted to.
The theater department is very tight knit, as I am sure it is in most schools. She has made some very close friends and good connections as well. She is currently at the beginning of her junior year and is studying in London for the semester at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. So far she is loving her experience there.
As far as voice and dance, they are definitely available. As part of the BFA Acting curriculum there are movement and theater dance classes that they are required to take. In addition to that, Adelphi has a great dance department in which theater majors can take dance classes, in fact a couple of her classmates are minoring in dance. They also have voice lessons available through the music department. My daughter took lessons last year and loved the voice teacher she worked with. His background is in musical theater so he helped her a lot (in fact my daughter said he taught her more than what she has learned in all those years of voice lessons she had while growing up!)
Please feel free to ask any questions.
