Theater schools that do musicals?

I am posting this here & and in the Theater forum. Do any of your kids attend theater programs that also do musicals?

At Ithaca, the MTs and the Acting majors are integrated. ALL BFAs must audition for all plays AND musicals. This year, my D (an MT major) is in a house of 5 junior MTs. Four of them are in plays, and she is in the fall musical. Similarly, there are Acting majors in the musical. It is like this every year. So, I guess this is a case where the Acting (theatre) program also does musicals, if you were asking b/c you want to know if someone can be in a BFA Acting program and still audition for and get roles in the musical. A caution: it is best to ask at each school specifically. There are many programs where the Acting majors and the MT never see each other, don’t share the same professors, and don’t audition for each other’s shows.

Thank you @monkey13 I was really seeking to know if any schools that do not offer a MT degree do perform musicals. Wanted to see if there are schools w/o a set MT program are worth looking at to add to the list. I have looked up some great theater schools and they do not perform musicals so I thought someone might be doing this and could help my search.

Boston University has always done musicals. As of the past year, they now offer a “concentration” in MT- but you are still technically a BFA Acting major.

@joyfulmama, I get it. You may want to post your question in the Theatre thread, then…they may know better. B/c the vast majority of people haunting this thread have kids in/wanting to get into a MT program.

Actually there are a good number of us with kids who are acting majors. There just seem to be more conversations over here than the theater thread. In my experience many/most people involved in theater have been or will be in both straight and MT productions at some point. I personally have known more theater people who wouldn’t do a musical (can’t sing etc) that MT people who wouldn’t do a play- but that is irrelevant.

I did a lot of research on schools/curriculums between acting and MT majors. D ended up auditioning for, and being accepted to, both types of programs. We focused on schools where there was a good deal of crossover (yet another criteria on our endless list!) While she chose an acting BFA there is no reason to think she will stop being involved in musicals.

UNCSA in Winston Salem, NC

@toowonderful Thank you, you worded what I am looking for much better than I did! Our BA MT school list is set, I was just thinking if we wanted to add a couple more perhaps I should notdicount theater programs where there is crossover.
@GSOMTMom thank you, I will research UNCCSA.

@joyfulmama, University of North Carolina School of the Arts in case you didn’t know what the acronym meant. How rude of me!

@joyfulmama - if you have some schools or regions in mind, you might just go to their theater/box office web pages and see what performances are scheduled this year or in years past. I have heard of a few schools that are excited to be adding musicals to their season this year (can’t remember the names). There may also be some schools that have musicals as “student-run” productions that are not part of the “formal” season.

Virginia Commonwealth University does musicals, and has some musical theatre classes. They do not have a musical theatre major.

California State University, Northridge & USC.

I second UNCSA. For a school that doesn’t want to be known as an MT school, they pack a lot of voice, dance, and musical productions into their curriculum. I’ve seen Into the Woods, OKLAHOMA!, Guys and Dolls, and numerous cabarets in the past. The Seniors are getting ready to do The Drowsy Chaperone this Fall. Awesome program!

University of Tennessee in Knoxville has a BA theater program that does musicals. They do not have MT but do 5 straight plays and a musical each year. They have a music department and you can take voice lessons from their faculty.
