Just wondering if anyone has personal information about the theatre major. Any information at all would be appreciated. Thanks!

We are interested in this thread too. What college in the consortium offers a theatre major?

I think you can major in theatre from any of the campuses. Yet, the theatre is on the Pomona campus. But there have certainly been theatre majors from Pitzer. The one thing about the theatre program is that it is not musical theatre.

Yes, I understand there is no musical theatre major or minor, but are there opportunities to at least appear in musicals?

Musicals are something like one every two or three years. The Pomona theater department's acting classes are almost entirely method-based (Stanislavski). Some people love it, some people hate it, but if you don't like method, it'll be virtually impossible to avoid if you take any of the acting classes.

There's a long (old) thread from last year on the Scripps forum (since theater is at Pomona, it doesn't matter which school you're looking at) that answers a lot of questions. (just search "theater" on the Scripps one and it should come up).

Typically, the 5 College theater department puts on one musical a year. To be honest, the program is not terrific. In fact, a few past productions have been downright terrible.

Still, there are lots of opportunities to be involved in smaller, student-organized plays. CMC's "Under the Lights" club puts on a series of short plays in the fall and then a musical in the spring. (Also, not the highest quality -- really just a club-type activity for people who enjoy acting but aren't planning on making it any sort of a career)

I believe Pitzer also puts on an annual performance of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, which is open to students from all 5 colleges.

Do you mean the entire theatre program is weak or just the musical theatre productions?

I love the Claremonts, but I personally found the overall theater program to be weak. (I came from a high school where drama was taken very seriously and the instructors and productions were top-notch, though, so perhaps I had unrealistic expectations.)

Originally I even planned on double-majoring in theater, but decided against it because the 5C department was a disappointment. Of course, your mileage may vary.

Edited to add: I should note that I was still very involved in music and performing arts. (For example, I directed and acted in a play that went up on the Pomona's mainstage theater.) I just didn't like the official theater department.

Hi caligrad ...

Is it possible to get involved with community theater? My D has been spoiled as well in hs with great theater and dance. My D is looking for a college(s) which has an appreciation for the arts and generally has a creative "feel". Does the weak theater impact the creative feel of the campus? Or is there enough other creative stuff going on to make up for this one relative weakness. THX

Hi there - Am picking up this thread, as any current info on the theater program at Pomona for students enrolled at other 5-C schools would be appreciated. General quality? Opportunities for involvement in theater productions outside of the major? What is the current state of musical theater on any of the campuses? Scheduling conflicts around rehearsals? If anyone’s out there, thanks!
