Hello all. I was wondering if anyone new what the theatre scene was like at WashU. Are there a lot of productions? Is it easy for kids who are not going to major in theatre to get into productions? Anything else you want to add would be greatly appreciated.

I dont know much about the theatre community, but as an incoming freshman (non-theatre major) I got an email in July detailing what I would need to do if I wanted to audition for any of the school's productions. There are five in total throughout the year and the email said they encourage non-majors and new students to audition for as few or as many productions as they want. Hope that helps :)

Because WU is not a conservatory, the actual Drama department is pretty small... they only graduate a handful of people majoring in it every year. As a result, most of the casts are non-majors. As sparkle28swim said, there are like 5 performances throughout the year in the big Edison Theatre. In one sense it's nice because you don't have to major in drama to be in a show... on the other hand, that means that anyone of 6,000 undergrads can audition so your competition may be more intense on the other hand. No matter which college you go to or how you look at it, you'll still have a lively and spirited auditions process :)

There are tons of student groups... All-Student Theatre which is entirely student run and puts on a semesterly show in the Quad and does their own set design and everything. Then you have Cast 'n' Crew, and Thyrsus, and of course the intro level acting courses which put on small performances in a couple of the smaller Black Box theatres on campus. Do some searching on the student government (student union) website and look at the directory of student groups.
