theatre essay?

I wonder if some of you on here have had this same dilemma. I am working on my essays, and I'm having trouble deciding on a subject for my commonapp essay. There are theatre things all over my app-- ECs, jobs, I may attach a theatre resume, will probably have a recommendation from my dept. head... so I can't decide if my main essay should be about theatre as well. I feel like it might be a good thing, because it displays passion for it, but could also be a bad thing if I come off one-sided. Thoughts?

I would say (and please know going in that I have no special knowledge; I am just the mom of a kid who is also in this process!) that if you want to write about theater and you find that theater is the topic about which you can write the most passionately, then go for it! After all, you (I am guessing) are applying for theater programs, right?

My d attended a college essay writing seminar last year. It was suggested that college essays should say something about the applicant that is not on the appplication or resume. My d did write her essays about theatre, but not about her experiences or training (the resume will give that info). Another thing to remember is that the essays can be very creative. Most of my d's essays were written in story form (personal narrative) and were very funny. Some of her essays were sort of poem like. She received positive comments on her essays at some auditions. One more tidbit of info is that BOCO announced to the parents on audition day that they do read the essays and they do pay attention to the essays and that they will turn away students because of the essay. They indicated that they receive many essays each year with poor punctuation, spelling and subject-verb agreement. So use spell check on your computer and have an english teacher or guidance counselor review your rough draft.
