Theatre homeschool students

Any other homeschoolers wanting to major in acting, musical theatre, or theatre management? If anyone has and is in school for any of that right now, how did you get your transcripts together and what extra caricculars did you do and etc?

I dont have the answer to that however someone who does would likely want a little more background.

For example what "grade" are you now in? Have you homeschooled from 1st grade to where you are now? I imagine the answers would be different for straight drama versus Mt. versus theater management, do you have a preference? Any other things you wanted to add would probably help like type of school you want, large, small, intense conservatory, broader, certain region of the country, etc.

Out of my own curiosity if you have home schooled presumably through hs, do you have any acting experience? As I would not think acting was very prevalent in a home school curriculum, how did you decide you wanted to pursue it?

Wally, my D does has met a number of homeschoolers who are extensively involved in the community theater scene in our area, and I imagine it is the same for homeschoolers elsewhere. Ditto dancers: we know several dancers who are very talented and driven and whose parents finally decided to homeschool them because they were dancing every day of the week, and homeschooling really worked well with that kind of schedule.
In other words (as you no doubt know! :)), school is not the only place to get theater/acting experience. In fact, one could make a case that a child who is homeschooled might have more time for dance lessons, etc. (As a side note, my child is not homeschooled! I am just talking hypothetically!)

Lisa,

I can see that for dancers……We wouldn’t have home schooled our daughter in hs but she would have gone to a different hs had she not been interested in acting. We have several community theaters in the area but there is not much they do were they have room for 14 -15 year olds. And, other than summer camps I don’t know where you get drama training outside of a school. Beyond hiring a coach but that’s not the same. The hs productions have been huge for our D in her development. Certainly not saying it couldn’t happen it just seems like going down that path would

a) be unusual
b) make it harder to get into a good college program.
c) less likely the student would try “the arts” and fall in love with them.

Maybe I’m wrong. I support those who choose to home school totally.

Hey, Wally, I don't think you're wrong by any means. I think it all depends on whether there is a vibrant community and/or children's theater scene in the place a person lives. As I said, my D discovered her love for MT and acting in school, and I wonder (now that you mention it!) if she would have discovered she had talent and interest in this area had she not been exposed to it in school, first via chorus in elementary school and then by doing a musical in 6th grade and getting hooked. So, yes, being exposed to both the school musical and a semester of mandatory drama work did give birth to what is now a full blown passion. But, as I said, we have run into (in community productions) kids who are homeschooled and participating in some very high quality community productions, some associated with community college programs, etc. As far as being homeschooled perhaps being a liability when it comes to admission to college programs, well, I wouldn't think it would make much difference if the kid can deliver the goods, right? Of course, I could make a case that a homeschooled student without much experience in acting would be at a disadvantage going up against a student who, for instance, studied acting for four years at a really good PA high school. But I might be wrong there. It depends on the students, right? Interesting discussion, nonetheless. It would be great to hear from some homeschoolers who pursued admission to a BFA program in MT. Anyone out there?

Hi. Yes i've been homeschooling since 1st grade. My town is smaller then some. I live in College Station where Texas A&M University is. It's frustrating cause of the few opportunities here. I was in a theatre group though for two years. I performed in alot of revue shows and in some plays with them. I went to NYC and we did a Rent workshop,Fosse workshop, Circle in the Square. I also performed for an Aids Hospis and got a pin from the American Theatre Wing. It was a hard and amazing experience to do that. I've had some very special and unique opportunities in the past. I have been taken piano lessons since I was 11. I've also done two different theatre camps. I have been in several musicals and have helped behind the scenes as well. I've been taking voice lessons off and on since I was 13. I've been lucky to find a new voice teacher in town. She is fabulous. My voice has really improved just from working with her the past few months. I also worked with an acting teacher for a few years. I have taken dance off and on. That is my weakest area though. Theatre has really been my passion since I can remember. I have definitely had some experience but definitely need more for my resume. I hope to start doing shows again at the theatre company here. I had to take care of my grandparents for several years. I plan to finish homeschool and take classes at the community college as soon I finish with the homeschool work. I'm looking at alot of different colleges. I have found this board to be very imformative and helpful.

Colleges i'm looking at

There are many

Roosevelt University
Depaul (For acting and theatre managment)
Elon University
Oklahoma City University
University of Utah
University of Southern Utah
Penn State University
Syracuse University
Cincinnati Conservatory of Music

More then that too. Those are my top ones i'm looking at right now. Mainly Elon University, Roosevelt University, and Depaul University are my top three.

I am doing 10 grade work right now.

I will apply to Sam Houston State University and Texas Christian University since they are in my state as well.

I am very determined to get into a program in one of those three areas. This is very ambitious, but my dream is to own or be one of the founders of my own theatre company someday.

I hope this answers some of the questions you all have asked.
