I'll be auditioning for the BFA theatre program at SMU, and I was a little shocked to see that they require a song. Considering I am auditioning for MT programs as well, I do have a song prepared, but I'm not quite sure what to expect.

Has anyone auditioned/had a son or daughter who auditioned? What song did they sing? Did they just use a CD (the website is unclear)? Did they do a full song?

Any info would be great...I'm not sure why I am freaking out so much about it, but any comments may make me feel better!

Don’t worry about the song for SMU. Some kids just sing Happy Birthday! My D auditioned last year and sang one of her MT songs acapella. Her BF is not a singer but sang Amazing Grace. They told us at an information session that they are not looking for “talent” just the confidence to stand in front of people and perform.

Ditto Megpmom’s comments. My D had “Cher impersonation” listed as a special skill on her resume—they asked her to sing some Cher…she did (briefly)…they laughed…D loved loved loved her SMU audition at Chicago Unifieds last year. Don’t stress the song at all but just have something fun in mind beforehand since you know it’s probably going to be asked of you. You’ll do great!

I thought one of the SMU letters said something about “16 bars unaccompanied.” I was surprised to see it as well, simply because many drama and acting programs don’t require it. Nice encouragement from the moms who’ve done this already. Thanks!

New question on SMU auditions. Can anyone tell me how long we should plan to be there? S has to be there at 9 a.m. and we’re aware there is an information session, etc. Anyone know how long total we should set-aside? ty

UVA87, the session is very short. The info session lasts maybe 15 minutes, then they begin auditions. When we went, there were only about 12 kids there. My daughter chose to go first, so we were out of there fairly quick. We did the campus tour the day before, so there was no need to hang around.

Thank you! Trying to schedule a flight and wanted to make sure we’d be out of there by early afternoon. I know everyone says to leave ample time for travel and auditions, etc., but like everyone on this board, we don’t have that luxury :o) Appreciate the info!

UMinnesota/Guthrie asks candidates to do this as well. I think they are looking for confidence, but also for timbre of your voice (as that is important to actors) and let’s face it: they may want to put on a musical at some point, so having someone who can sing can only help!
