My D is looking to double major as an undergrad. and get a masters in education later on. She will major in theatre with a focus on directing. She has applied to Willamette, Puget Sound, Whitman, St. Mary’s (CA), Grinnell, Knox, Beloit, Ohio Wesleyan, College of Wooster, Kenyon, Sarah Lawrence, Wheaton (MA), Goucher, Drew, and Juniata. (We cast a wide net looking for merit money.) She is looking for a school that will give her lots of chances to direct and have autonomy to create her own path early on (not have to wait for junior or senior year) in a collaborate environment. Any insights out there? Many thanks!
As a member of the audience, I can attest that Whitman produces top notch theater. I think there is a lot of room to jump in and take the bull by the horns in all aspects of production for students. My son was in science, so I don’t speak from first hand experience, but I’d imagine that a little fire in the belly will be met with opportunities. Has she talked to the head of the department yet? She should contact them.
My daughter attends Drew University and is a sophomore. She loves it there and there are tons of opportunities to direct student work and their is a directing track if I am not mistaken. I will answer any questions I can.
We have visited Drew but in the summer and were not able to meet anyone from the theatre department at the time. D has written to Whitman’s department head but we haven’t visited yet. Merit $ will be a factor. Drew offered a nice package ($25k, I believe) but we are waiting to hear from Whitman. I’m getting the impression we can’t expect that kind of money from Whitman. Since we live in California, Whitman, is more favored. Drew was very impressive, thought!
If you get the chance to visit Drew again, I know my daughter would be happy to show you around and even arrange for your daughter to sit in on a class.
That is very kind. Thank you!
