Theft at NYU? Can anybody comment of this?

Hi everyone--I'm attending NYU in the fall. I have a pretty expensive computer set up, and it's necessary for all the stuff I do with it, which is great, but....is theft out of dorms common at NYU? I know i can get a security cable for my monitor and laptop, but i can't really do anything about my external hd or my wireless keyboard and mouse....should I be worried?

Theft is uncommon, but it happens in the dorms. However, it almost always involves someone leaving their door unlocked. So... well, don't leave your door unlocked, even if you're just stepping out to go down the hall! If you can't see your door, lock it.

If you leave your room locked, then the only thing that could happen is roommates stealing your stuff. However, that's also really rare - chances are, your roommates will be just fine.

Hope I made you feel better. It's really not a problem, unless you do stupid things.

hmm...i just hope i don't have a roommate who forgets to lock the door....anyone else?

**** happens.

Doors lock on their own, and you also have the option of using a deadbolt. I was able to break into my own room and a bunch of others with a new york public library card, but only to help people who left their keys inside, help myself when i thought i left my keys then realized they were in my pocket (i was drunk). But theft does happen, I know someone who had one of those tin signs stolen off their door. i remember reading that petty theft (items under 1,000) is the biggest crime on campus.

haha you were drunk enough to be stupid enough to forget that your keys were in your pocket, but you were able to pick a lock? i'm impressed haha. i'm thinking i'll be in uhall, so hopefully the newer locks won't be easily picked.

haha yeah, opening the door with a library card is THAT easy.

Or metrocard.

I don't know of anyone who's gotten their stuff stolen that hasn't done something stupid to deserve it (ie, leaving door unlocked). That said, you probably want the security cables, if only for peace of mind.
