Theranos, were any of you victimized?

Elizabeth Holmes was famous for the statement that “First they think you’re crazy, then they fight you, and then all of a sudden you change the world”.

Now it’s “First they think you’re crazy, then all of a sudden you think you’re crazy”…

Sounds familiar doesn’t it?

Interesting strategy. I wonder if the alleged mental disease also explains her fake deep voice. From what I recall of her upbringing, she was raised in an affluent household and went to a top private school in Houston. Given the expertise of “her” psychologist (Mindy Mechanic) I wonder if she’s going to claim she was abused as a child.

And whoever said thank goodness her blood testing fakery wasn’t still around when Covid emerged is exactly right. What a nightmare that would have been.

Another delay in Elizabeth Holmes’ trial

I already feel sorry for this child…

Jury selection is set for August 31.

Meanwhile, as I mentioned above, Theranos caused a lot of damage to the diagnostic industry by spooking VCs. And women-led startups suffered the most:

Kind of amazing they got so few convictions.

They should have had John Carreyrou as a consultant for the prosecution. :relaxed:

From CNN:

Holmes faces up to 20 years in prison as well as a fine of $250,000 plus restitution for each count of wire fraud and each conspiracy count.

Will be interesting to see what the actual consequences are, in terms of prison and monetary fines. I predict no prison time, but who knows?

A couple of years in the “club fed” and no profiting from anything Theranos-related. Plus fines. That’s what I think. Many white collar crooks got off with much less and continued doing what they have been doing. Not sure if there is any more benefit to the society from keeping her locked up for much longer, but she needs to get some taste of prison.

While I am pleased at the guilty verdicts, I am surprised about the not guilty verdicts pertaining to patients’s test results. My background is in laboratory medicine not the law, but I find the wrongs done to paying patients the most egregious.

It is really hard to prove intent, especially when she was not directly involved…

Let’s hope Sunny gets what he deserves.

Do you think they will send an unmarried mom of an infant to club fed? I am not sure they will.

Didn’t Holmes marry Billy Evans in 2019?

But no, I don’t think she will spend a day in prison.

I just read today an interview with one of the jurors and he said it was just kind of hard to convict someone so “likeable” and who was sincerely passionate in her belief she was helping people.

Gag.

You’re right, looks like that’s new news! I also don’t think she will go to prison.

The legal experts cited in the articles posted on Law360 think she will get a double-digit prison term, but not 4x20 years. In part to send a message to other startup manipulators that such “fake it until you make it” practice is no longer acceptable, especially in biotech. Of course, she will appeal.

Interesting article. I disagree that she got pregnant solely to look sympathetic. She was 37, facing a loooong prison sentence. That would be an equivalent of getting a hysterectomy…
