They say I can't graduate early?

Hi everyone,

So I ran into a situation with my current university. I was supposed to graduate in Fall 2015, a semester early, but I ran into a problem with classes. I have a total of seven classes left, of which I was going to take three this summer and four next fall, but one of the classes is a prerequisite of another and it is only offered in the Fall and Spring semesters.
I was supposed to take that class this semester, but it was full and I had no idea you can still get into full classes if you talk to the professors.
Now my advisor is telling me that I cannot graduate next fall, but in Spring instead. What is upsetting me is that I would be taking one class over the Spring (I am trying to graduate as soon as possible).

Does anyone know if there is anyway around this? I have been told that I can possibly take the prerequisite class in the same semester as the upper level class if the professors will allow it…

Also, do professors have a “upper-hand” over advisors in these situations?

Thanks!

Anyone?

Chances are slim that you’ll be able to graduate in the Fall. However, you have a few options that you can try.

  1. Check if the prerequisite class is offered at another college, during the summer. If so, make sure your college will accept it.
  2. How far into the semester are you? You may be able to add the class, but you'll be behind (may not be worth it).
  3. Hope that a professor is asked/volunteers to teach it during the summer.

Of course professors can make exceptions and let you in without pre-req’s entirely or while taking the pre-req concurrently. Courses can be taken at other schools also and on line. Just make sure that the school will accept the credits/classes, as suggested in the post above this one.
