Thick envelope vs thin envelope?

So when I was applying to colleges a looooong time ago if you got a thick envelope it meant you were admitted and if you got a thin envelope it meant you did not get in.

Is this the same for boarding schools?

Pretty sure it’s mostly via email now.

okay, here comes the deluge of replies…

DA sends a package with green m&ms, Andover sends everyone a package fedex, Exeter sends parents an email, Choate has you log on to your go choate with your user ID…

Just as an aside, we were told that rejections come a day or two early, so we didn’t check our mailbox until March 10. We let the mail pile up as we didn’t want to get any bad news before 3/10.

just to add, those nice things are for acceptances only of course.
The rejection letters are thin.

Wondering if anyone else finds these “gimmicky” acceptance packages a little tacky?? Guess I am old school, but a well written and gracious acceptance letter on a qulaity stock paper would do just fine.

Mercersburg sent a tee shirt. It was a nice touch.

With the exception of Andover, just about every school I remember last year sent email notifications first, then followed up with fat folders of info. for acceptances (quite practical really, Madaket, as the packet contains lots of information other than the acceptance letter) and thin letters for rejection/waitlist.

rbgg - rejections don’t come earlier.

Probably 90% of schools have online notification of some sort. Those that don’t often orchestrate their mailings of acceptances to arrive on March 10th.

Last M10 was a happy day. I hope this next one will be as well!

It was nice for my friend to receive a big fat envelope from Peddie. Across the front of it was the word, congratulations! I think thats nice for the parents to ease the suspense while they wait for their child to get home to actually open the darn thing.

Deerfield does not inform students by e-mail. It was exciting to obtain some acceptances as early as 12:01a on the 10th (Miss Porter’s). Many others informed by e-mail but sent big packages in a few days, mostly with a nice “gift” included. DA kept us on our toes, but my d received a positive outcome, with a great poster and green & white m&m’s.

Not selected or wait-listed came in very very thin envelopes.

Madaket: the previous posts weren’t clear. The ‘gimmicks’ arrive in addition to the gracious acceptance letter + packet.

Not all acceptances arrive on the same day. They try, but some packages have to travel farther than others.

M&Ms? You get m&ms???

Do they send M&Ms to international students too?

yes, I think we did get a couple rejection letters one or two days before 3/10. They were in our pile of mail in our mailbox that we didn’t open til 3/10; just our experience.

O.K., here’s the scoop: If you’re accepted, it’ll be a thick email. If you’re rejected, it’ll be a thin email.

Just KIDDING! Both emails would likely be links to the school’s online results. By the way, this year, March 10th falls on Thursday, so there shouldn’t be any delivery delays caused by weekends.

Really? That’s so odd. Were they from boarding schools? The only reason I am questioning this is because I thought that most schools had agreed to a notification date of March 10 and that it would be uncool for them to notify anyone before that date. I guess that rule only applies to acceptances?

I think some schools notify the parents of legacies of rejections by phone ahead of March 10th.

Perhaps the regular mail was unusually speedy in delivery? If they mailed it on March 8th, expecting it to arrive on March 10th, it might arrive on March 9th.

Peri:   Made me blink…

We didn’t have any early waitlists/rejection letters either–in fact, ours came later than the acceptance packets, if I’m remembering correctly. That does seem odd. I wonder if the schools just mis-timed their arrival?

yes, from MA boarding schools. There was some discussion on CC last year on this. We were warned that some rejections could arrive early, so we took heed. Didn’t want to jinx anything and opened the box only on March 10.

Two of the letters were on the very bottom of a very full mailbox, which leads me to conclude yes, a couple arrived before March 10.

I’m superstitious, so I won’t be able to tell you when they arrived. Maybe others can chime in if they have had a similar exp.

Note to self: don’t answer the phone on March 9th. :)
