you can go to airborne and air assualt as a freshman in rotc.
do you have to wait two years at west point?

I knew whose post that was because of the thread title.

I'm pretty sure you can go after your yuk year at west point. My friend did both air assault and airborne, im not sure how that compares to ROTC. I'm not sure how hard it is to get airborne in rotc but I heard it is pretty hard. I think just about anybody at west point can go airborne or air assault...

A lot of cows do either Airborne or Air Assault before/after they do a rotation in the Beast cadre. I don't know if it's the same with Firstie summer (I assume so).

dang- it sounds like its easier to get aaslt and abn through rotc. you cant do both your freshman year? oh btw, does the parachute team get halo wings?

From what I've heard, no. I'm not sure what altitude they do most jumps from, but I remember a cadet on here saying that you can't get your HALO wings while at West Point.

Check out the old "Sports/Clubs" thread. There was some discussion on the parachute team.

That's the one I was thinking of.

cows? yuk? i think i'm missing something here...lol

A cow is a junior at West Point, a yuk (or yearling is a sophomore). You will also see the terms firstie (senior) and plebe (freshman).

Speaking of the cow/yuk thing, who does most of the (verbal) hazing at West Point come from, the Cows or the Yuks? I know at the Naval Academy, the yuks basically don't do any of the hazing and are very friendly towards the plebes; one midshipman described them as "friends" while cows are "annoying disciplinarians."

It's pretty same at West Point. When I went for a visit my plebe escort made a big deal about how the yuks are your friends and in general will rarely verbally haze you.

When I was there...a few yuks were nice to the plebes, most were not. The firsties really seemed to be the ones to avoid though. Not sure if thats right, just seemed like the general attitude.

Naw, not really right. The Cows are the ones you want to avoid for the most part. Firsties generally don't care, as long as you greet. The Yuks can be especially vicious if they think you're slighting them at all, probably because they were Plebes just last year.

So the basic idea is if we show respect, know matter what the grade level or the situation, we'll get through relatively easy?

No, you won't get through relatively easily. There are some people that are just plain jerks. And there are others who just like to haze. You'll get something of everything. However, respect is always advisable.

When we do come into contact with the jerks and habitual hazers, what fuels their actions? Is it better to show no emotion, or will they just try harder? As high school seniors (with the exception of our active Army or ROTC members) a lot of us haven't had to deal with this kind of thing for a while.

What fuels their actions? They could have had a bad day, or just might be malicious in general. You NEVER want to show emotion, no matter what, and that's something that will be drilled into you from the first day. You show any sign of weakness, and they'll drill into you.

When you're in PTs, there is no rank on them. However, you can most of the time tell who the Plebes are by how nervous they are, looking at the ground and being jittery in general. The key to anything here is confidence. If you can pull off confidence, then you'll be golden. Walk tall with your head up, look like you have a purpose, and you'll be just fine. At the beginning, upperclassmen will go after the ones that look scared. Also, ReOrgy week is a HUGE time, because the upperclassmen will all be getting their first impressions of you. You don't want to screw up.

It's really not that bad--you just turn off your emotion and do what you're told. You'll be fine, and ready for it when it comes.

thanks soccer...i knew of plebes when i visited the naval academy during my 8th grade student gov trip...

random, but i still don't get all this "thizz"ing going on here...maybe living in suburbia has blinded me from becoming cooler or something...

meg

To be honest, I have know idea what the title means either; then again, look where I'm from.
