Things every freshman should know

well, I would say, don't hook up during orientation at all. everyone's so new that it's just really memorable when people hook up that early. if you have to hook up, DON'T DO IT AT THE PARTY! i'm serious, EVERYONE remembers the public makeout sessions from orientation. it gives a bad first impression.

Fuddy-duddy mom speaking:

How about not hooking up AT ALL? Nothing like waiting for a serious relationship.

not gonna happen. this is a campus where the alcohol flows freely (and by "freely" i mean both in great quantities, and for free) and though some may abstain, most will not. hookups WILL happen, it's inevitable, but doing so in public during the first few days (or even weeks) can give you a reputation you may not want. I've seen it happen.

Fuddy duddy mom #2:

Please tell me that this advice is not just for the girls . . . .

No, it is advice meant for both genders. If it wasn't, then the boys would be hooking up with boys and that's a whole other can of worms.

And I said serious relationship, not marriage (as much as I would like to be). The reputation you receive for randomly hooking-up is deserved if you do the deed. And yes that goes for guys too.

As a mother of three boys, may I say amen to that?!

Any advice for internationals in specific?

Beauty is right the early hookups are usually remembered the longest. As the year goes on they sort of disappear.

And Motherdear suprisingly many hookups actually lead to serious relationships.

Shouldn't the serious relationships lend themselves to the hooking up later on rather than vice versa?

To me (in my old age), hooking up implies 1 night stands which in my recollection is the exact opposite of a serious relationship.

I am such a fogey. I have been chastised by my children of late for using the term "hook up" to mean meet up with. I must adjust my slang to reflect the times.

As my kids have explained, a hookup can fall short of the full monty. In any event, discretion is best, I am sure, and the warning about early hookups is a good one.

Which companies would you recommend for cell service and coverage in the lexington area?

Cingular and Verizon both work really well, and I believe Virgin does as well - just stay away from T-Mobile

Can a class go toward both the GE requirement and a major requirement?

yes

.

okk sorry I'm gonna change topic a little...
and this is not incredibly important at all but I was just wondering if w&l get bands to play on campus once in a while? I know it's a small school and all but still?

another yes, not very often though and they're not exactly huge bands

the fraternities are responsible for most bands that come to lexington

ibleedorangeandblue: Last year we had Umphrey's McGee, the Black Crowes, and the Wailers. Umphrey's is my favorite band so I was pretty pumped. The bands the fraternities bring in are your standard college cover bands, and they frankly get old after a while. But the GAB does bring in some great bands; check out buffalocreek.wlu.edu -- that's the festival we have every spring term. We're trying to get GAB to bring in up-and-coming bands more frequently, rather than spending tons of money on big name bands like the Black Crowes.

good stuff morgan - def excited to see some good up and coming bands next year!

I saw the Wailer's on the night I visited before decision time. They were awesome (and I usually dont like that kind of music),

Okay, so this is a pretty old thread, but as D prepares to head to Lexington next month she's found some of the posts here pretty useful. Therefore, I'm bumping it up and asking anyone who can add any additional advice to please do so.

The items she's mulling over right now include:

What kind of computer to get? D is thinking about a Tablet, or maybe a Macbook.

D has a single in Gilliam. The dimensions are something like 10 X 13. Wondering what additional accoutrements might be worth considering.

D would like to know if anyone can offer any class registration tips.

Thanks.
