This is meant to be a fun thread (not negative). I saw the latest “historical” American Girl Doll is from 1999 and thought wow my daughter is old now (she was reading the original historical American Girl Doll books in 1999.)
What pop culture things make you feel old?
The 25th anniversary of the Titanic movie?
Paul McCartney being 80 years old?
We have an oldies station on the radio. The songs it plays now aren’t the “oldies” of the 60’s anymore. No longer is there an Elvis Hour or breakfast with the Beatles. The oldies are now songs from my teen years.
I turned it on in the car the one day just shocked to hear a song from the 80’s. My S22 was like “who even listens to the radio?”
I am old!
Just this morning, I was chatting with two neighbors who are my age. One mentioned helpful hints & said … who was that lady? We all said “Heloise” & laughed about the fact that our kids would have no idea who we were talking about.
Zoom! I didn’t know I had lines on my face until Zoom, so another thing to blame on the pandemic. Haha Anyway, I don’t feel old, but perhaps look a tad more wise.
I’ve lost quite a bit of weight for son’s upcoming wedding and was trying on some dresses in my closet that, apparently, I haven’t worn in decades. Shoulder pads.
Seeing the actors of our youth in movies today and wondering what happened to them and why are they playing grandparent roles? That must just be heavy makeup, right?
Most of my co-workers were born after I graduated college. There are only 3 “dinosaurs” and whenever a celebrity dies we all chuckle that only the 3 of us know who they are.
I was always the young/hip one at work til I took time off to raise my kids. This role reversal is throwing me for a loop.
I tried to raise my daughter with knowledge of pop culture from before her time (watched classic movies, listened to older music, etc.) So when Raquel Welch died she knew who that was (probably one of the few in her age group).
Finding it harder and harder to use our TV! I miss the tv we had as kids which had a simple on/off button. Of course, the size of the new TVs is incredible and the number of viewing options is remarkable, but I do miss how simple the old TVs were to use.
@ChoatieMom - huge congratulations to your son and family on his upcoming wedding. Our son married last year. It was a very, very small on post wedding (covid restrictions were still in place) by the post chaplain but it was a lovely, memorable time.
In general, thinking about what my parents (and my ILs) were doing at my age. They were so old! We’ve become our parents!
Workplace times:
I remember the day one of my upstairs co-workers was BORN! His mom & my MIL were teaching partners. And he’s been here 5 years now!
At my first job, I thought it was hilarious that one of the VPs started working there the year I was born. I’m long past that now! Plenty of my co-workers are 25 years old. And I’ve been working longer than that!
When I hear someone has 20 years experience, I automatically think “What a newbie!”
Realizing that both of my kids are older than when I got married!
Thinking “I have 2 kids in their 20s? How did that happen?” Then I think about my parents who have kids in their 50s! Yikes!
And one for my mom… You know you’re old when you have to get a note from your doctor certifying that you are mentally/physically able to RENT A CAR! That happened to her a couple of years ago. She was like… What? Wait? NO!!!
P.S. And I would also love a “Dumb TV.” And also a “Dumb Car!” I hate all of those fancy features. Now back to my rocking chair…
An (even) older friend of mine said she knew she was old when she noticed the wrinkles on her daughter’s face. It made her sad. I hope the daughter doesn’t know mom thinks that.
When I attended my 50th HS reunion, and all the men looked like my dad (or the memories of my dad). Oddly, I didn’t feel the same way about the women.
DH says when he is in a crowded elevator with mirrors. Looking in your own mirror every morning isn’t the same. In an elevator with others, there’s a frame of reference.
Somewhere along the line pop music became mysterious to me. It seems to have changed so much. I don’t enjoy the current “beat”.
Lots of fantasy, horror and dystopian movies and books. Not my style.
Old celebrities who die are very familiar to me.
