Things that make you (or your child) feel old

Putting a big smile on your face and kissing your lifetime partner will make the “old feeling” go away.

Every time one of my sons says “you know, back in the 1900’s, when you were born”.

A colleague at work admitted
that he didn’t know who Yoko Ono is. I prompted him with a reference to John Lennon. Still no recognition. He did acknowledge the he kinda sorta knows about the Beatles.

For me, in the last 2 weeks:

  1. The #1 Netflix show right now has a “old guy” on it…who is a year younger than me.

  2. My kid started an activity in which she’s now Ms. So-and-so to other people’s kids.

Questions or threads that require me to reflect on my age😀

When my husband and I started dating, Paul McCartney was in his 40s, and I remember a conversation where we remarked how old that seemed. Now we are no longer in our 40s…

Yep, the Oldies Station that I grew up with played the 50s and 60s. Now I can’t find any station that plays the 50s at all, and I miss those songs! The Dominos, the Isley Brothers, Chuck Berry, Little Richard.

Sirius has a 50’s station! And a 60’s one…and so forth. It’s probably the only reason I keep my subscription!!

First time I felt old was when I was in my early 30’s (decades ago) and we had summer interns in the office. Somehow the Beatles came up in discussion and one girl said, oh yeah, we studied them in music theory class. I’m thinking, I listened to them on my transistor radio.

Just now, the paper has a story “From the Archives” talking about how 40 years ago, the first wild condor egg was taken to the San Diego Zoo to start the program to save the condors. I’m thinking, sure, I remember when that happened.

Dang. My kids certainly know who the Beatles are and can sing along. They are 18 and 22 for reference. They also really dig a lot of 90s music that my DH and I came of age with, so that’s fun. We can turn them onto bands, if you like Pixies you might like Sonic Youth. If you like Liz Phair you might like PJ Harvey. If you like Bikini Kill you might like Le Tigre. My 22 yr old asked for Pixies tickets as a birthday present.

What makes me feel old – my 30th high school reunion I skipped. Realizing that the 2050s are much closer than the 1950s. And the 2060s are too. That’s like sci-fi territory!

Realizing I’m the one who has been at school the longest now among those at my lunch table.

Realizing I’ve worked there longer than any of the students have been alive.

Having to remember I can’t reference things we “all” know about with the students, because I’m the only one who knows about them except in theory. This includes where I was when 9/11 happened - and Challenger exploding, etc.

Today I pulled a tube top (pretty fancy in gold and black!) out of stored clothes. WAY too old for this but fond memories! I discarded a lot of items but tucked it back in the box,

When kids that I taught as undergraduates celebrate getting tenure…

When I realize that I have taught members of three generations as undergrads.

When I realize that I’m as old as my parents were when I started grad school (and I took some time off in the middle).

When I realize that more time has passed since I started my regular military service than the time that had passed between the end of WWII and the beginning of my military service.

I once explained to a co-worker that cc: meant carbon copy. I then proceeded to tell her about carbon paper. I lost her when I talked about putting it between two sheets of paper and typing on a typewriter.

I totally get your description, and was alive during the carbon copy days, but I have always thought cc: meant “courtesy copy.” But you are correct - Dr. Google says it’s “carbon copy.”

This is me doing research for a college paper. Not my actual photo, but that’s how it used to be. The younger coworkers shuddered!

Remember mimeographs with that distinctive-smelling purple ink? Not even sure how I’d explain that one.
