what are some things that will set me apart from all the other applicants that go to Cornell. I am curious about what i can do in preperation, just so i can make sure i have a fighting chance. i know to keep grades and sat high as possible, but what ecs do they want and leadership and community service? is there anyone that has been accepted or goes to cornell that could give me some advice? thank you so much!

You are ok as long as you have all the basics: 2300+ SAT, 3.95+ GPA UW, 500+ volunteer hours, and a couple of national records or gold medals. And if you're lacking in the awards section you can make up for it in the summer olympics.

^ Are those called basics? I do not have any of them, and got accepted there. What made me get in?

jhouck11: there is no formula on what ecs to do and trying to second guess what the adcom wants isn't going to work. Be genuine and participate in activities that interest you, the point isn't to have the longest list of activities.

Mom of Two Teens is right. I just got accepted into Cornell and there really is no set formula. They accept thousands of kids and every one of them are different i cant say there is anything that you SHOULD do aside from working hard, getting good grades, and maybe preparing you for the SATs/ACTs. As for extracurricular activities, do things that interest you that will you enjoy doing.

My EC's were actually mediocre, but my grades were 3.95+ UW GPA and SAT 2300. I got in too. I guess it depends.

Your lack of gullibility.

^ lol nice.

show passion in something. I was definitely one of the lowest of the RD acceptances this year (statistics wise) from what i've seen at my school and CC, but I had found and held a non-paid internship at an environmental lab during my senior year. I talked about it in my essay and applied to the environmental undecided major at cals. I also had a science fair project that went to the state fair in the environmental science category. I think cornell really likes kids who are very career driven and less liberal artsy (although there's probably a lot of the exceptions), and I think thats what got me in. Good Luck =)

"any suggestons on things to do? THANK YOU"

Yes, find time to relax and don't stress out. You're only a Sophomore & you're worried you're not doing enough? Chill.
Peace

it was cool of you to brag about all of your activities on a public forum and then cover it up by asking for help about what else to do....even though you're essentially doing absolutely every genre of activity you can do. if you want my suggestion, raise your GPA.

i wasn't trying to brag. i tried doing this type of thing in another forum, and they said they wanted to see my ECS and activities, and i thought that if i posted them here then maybe you guys would have a better idea. i wasn't trying to brag whatsoever.

Really? Then you would have listed the ECs in the first post. Whatever....

well i didn't realize that. i started this wanting to know what to do. then some people told me to do differently. soyeah

yeah man just relax a little bit and worry more about making good grades and not so much about how to pad your resume. i got into Cornell and i honestly didnt even start thinking about colleges until junior year. not to say that its bad to be starting things early, but there's only so much you can do. just focus on your grades and do what you WANT to do. i think admissions officers can tell when an applicant is doing things just to get into college vs. when they are doing things because they are passionate about them...

alright. yeah i am just freaking cuz my brother applied to stanford, and he didn't get in. so i keep thinking that if i don't start getting ready for college now, then i'll get rejected from the schools i wanna get into. and alright thanks for the advice

make sure ur stats aren't too good or u'll get rejected for overqualification

are you serious?

Yes. WashU and BC do it all the time.
