This year I'm going to be a freshman at a pretty big public college in Pennsylvania. I have two younger sisters, ages 15 and soon-to-be 12, and they really want to come visit (I don't object.) The 15 yr. old wants to get a feel of what college is like, while the 12 yr. old just thinks it's SO COOL to be on a college campus (haha). I was wondering if anyone had their younger sibs come up to campus and what you did together. I'm thinking if I have a plan my mom will be less worried. :)

Get them absolutely wasted/high on insert your choice of drug.

To be serious, take them through any labs you use or the library. If they are already interested in a field, like languages, science, engineering, etc., see if they can sit in on a low level class. Also take them to your favorite place to eat and some social event.

I don’t have younger siblings, but I’d show them the “hot spots” on campus. Ours would be things like the mall, which is a big strip of grass in the center of campus where everyone plays sports, or one of our stadiums, or the Student Union where the dining hall and student clubs are.

What are they interested in? If they like theatre, maybe you have a fine arts quad. If they like science, try some labs [if possible]. Future doctors? The medical center or medical school. Sports? Stadiums or introduce them to a team. If there’s a club about something they like, maybe you can crash a meeting.

I agree with AtomicCafe. Show them the “hot spots”, athletic facilities, and dining courts. If your school has a VERY nice library might as well show that too ;)

When I was a sophomore in high school my brother was college visiting so I followed him and did the tour with him and the family. None of the schools interested me since I wanted to go to Cornell at that time and his list of schools included Seton Hall and SUNY Cortland for example.

My sister, who was 16 at the time, came up for siblings weekend last year. I had already had big plans to see our hockey team take on a big rival in the arena where the pros play, so I snagged a ticket for her to come along to that. So during the first day I took her around to some of my favorite places, like restaurants and shops and a bakery I really like-- she was interested in what I do for fun, and then at night we went to the game. She had a blast learning all the chants and everything, and I would definitely take her to an athletic event again. The school spirit is impressive I guess to someone who’s never set foot on a college campus before. lol

The next day I kind of gave her free reign over what she wanted to do, she really liked one of the restaurants we’d gone to the day before so we went there again, and I showed her around campus. She wanted to see the union, a lecture hall, and the library, and I believe I showed her some other random buildings just because they were cool looking. She had come hating my school and left thinking she wants to apply, so I’d say it was a job well done.

The only time one of my siblings has come down was the night of our spring concert because one of her favorite bands was playing (Weezer). We didn’t really have time to walk around, we basically went to my dorm and she met my friends. We went to the concert and afterwards we ordered a pizza, watched Friends, and hung out with my friends until about two in the morning.
She had fun, and my friends liked her. She liked what she saw of campus. If she was a little older (she was 15) or had a clear academic interest I probably would have found time to show her those buildings before we went home the next day, but since that’s wasn’t really on her agenda (even though that’s how we advertised the trip to my dad) I didn’t.

My brother (12) is coming up to my school in the fall and I’m really excited to show him around. Here are some of the things I’m thinking of doing - maybe you have the equivalent things at your school.

1) Get tickets for him to go to a football or basketball game.
2) Dairy store (known at my school, fantastic ice cream etc)
3) Museum on campus
4) Planetarium on campus
5) My favorite food places.

In terms of your sister who is almost college-age, I’d definitely show her around campus, to the student union, library, buildings etc. Maybe take her to a movie (if your college has an on-campus cinemas) or some sort of college-sponsored activity.
