Think about transferring from Wisconsin to Chicago.

Is this a wise choice? I kind of like the academic environment at UChicago, not that Wisconsin is a bad place, because I do love it here.

Would I gain anything by attending Chicago, or is it not worth the money? I'm not too sure, and was thinking perhaps someone could help me.

I really just want to Study IR/Global Security/Econ/Mideast Studies, and have the best grad school/job prospects in the future.

Also, does anyone have substantial info on Chicago's joint degree M.A. program in International Studies?

And if anyone needs more info from me, let me know!

Thanks.

well the first step would be to see if your stats match up with thatt of uchicago's students

Well, my stats are somewhat above average, I think. I'm not an uberstudent, but, here goes:

High school:

Public school, not particularly great and didn't offer many APs
3.88 GPA, ranked in top 10% I think
In Honors Program, took several APs: Lit, Lang, Bio, Calc AB, Physics B, passed them all
ACT: 29

ECs: 3 years of Quiz Bowl, won two championships
3 years of football, one year on varsity
3 years of Freshman Mentor club, we got students acclimated to HS
2 years on my city's Mayor's Youth Commission
2 years of Model UN, headed the Arab bloc my first year

Worked at a hospital for a year as a Certified Nursing Assistant. I may be missing a few things as I'm just going off what I remember.

At Wisconsin:

Took Intro to International Relations, Islam: Religion and Culture, First Semester Arabic, and a special Undergraduate Research Class. I'm in the Honors Program at Wisconsin. My first semester GPA is 3.75.

At school, I'm part of an undergraduate forum on campus called the LUBAR Institute for the Study of Abrahamic Religions. I'm also involved in the Muslim Student's Association, and started a club in my dorm to play Super Smash Bros., because who doesn't like Smash Bros?

Next semester I plan on getting involved in a few more things at school as well.

Any thing else you guys would like to know?

I don't know if this is the program you are referring to:
The University of Chicago Committee on International Relations

And in terms of transferring, I think you have to consider the benefits and drawbacks carefully. I imagine that the student body is much more academically oriented than it is as Wisconsin, and those in the know may value a Chicago degree over a Wisconsin degree by virtue of Chicago's strengths in the particular programs you're interested in, but I think if you continue to do well and enjoy your time at Wisconsin, you will have access to top programs after graduation.

If facebook is any indicator, Chicago seems to admit students from a large range of undergraduate schools for its graduate programs, and in that cohort, a Wisconsin degree would be nothing to sneeze at.

I think that is what I was looking for. If what I'm reading is correct, it seems you have to be in your final year of study to apply for the joint BA/MA degree.

And yeah, at Wisconsin, they keep telling me that I can springboard to any grad program I want if I work hard enough. I think the part of me that wants to give Chicago a shot is it's academic pull...there are some people here who want to talk about issues and the world around us, but from what I hear, it's a normal thing for nearly everyone at Chicago. People love what they're doing and it's easy to find someone who may be interested in discussing your obsession as well. Not that I hate parties, but it seems too many at Wisconsin are focused on finding the next party. I guess I like to keep life simple and learn more, and can't always take too much of the crazy.

That said, I wouldn't be sad about staying at Wisco. It's a fun environment and we have some absolutely wonderful professors. Chicago just seems like a better fit, but I think I'll take a tour sometime and mull over it some more.

yep try to think it over some more

Thanks for all the help guys.

Any other suggestions or advice?

I think it's worth applying and visiting-- you're not committing and you're exploring other possibilities. Do you have an idea of how much you're willing to pay? How do you feel about being in an apartment (most transfers live in university-owned apartments) and not a dorm?

At least you know you have made a home for yourself at Wisconsin. If you decide to go to Chicago, there will be a period of transition, too, but if this place is amazing for you in a way that Wisconsin is not, and the finances work out, then it's worth transferring, I think.

Yeah, the finances may be an issue. My brother is going to college next year as well, and the in-state Wisco tuition is very affordable compared to UChicago.

Is Chicago good with aid? I don't think I fall into the umbrella of the Odyssey Scholarships so...yeah

And with the rough stats I gave you guys, am I an acceptable match for Chicago?
