Think an Apple MacBook is a good choice?

Well, is it?

13 inch, White, 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo, 512 MB Memory

Anyone own this one? Let me know how you like it/don't like it.

Know anyone that does have it? How do they like it?

I don't own one specifically -got a Dell - but MacBooks are more if you like the OS and looks over the price. You can get an equivalent system for cheaper. Furthermore, you can always dual boot into Windows via boot camp.

MACs can support Microsoft OS, plus if you get a Mac, you get a free iPOD

Ok here goes.

If you like Mac or really don't need much of PC's unique options (PC coding or games), go for it.

If you do want to use a Windows, you can still you can use boot camp.

BUT, if you game, a Macbook Pro is not worth it. The CPU and GPU (video card) is equivilant to many other ones but it is severely underclocked (as in runs slower than it should). Of course this is easy to fix but the next problem is not.

The Macbook also runs pretty damn hot. And the palm rest gets discolored.

Lastly if a part craps out on you, or if you want to replace anything.. no go. Everything is soldered onto the motherboard so either send the entire thing into Apple and hope for the best or buy a new one.

Now if you never plan on using Mac OS, don't even bother. Get something else (and cheaper most likely).

How bout, of the Dells, which is best?

Get something light. I got a m140, which is currently discontinued- it's only five pounds, I believe.

And I think Berkeley has a certified Dell repairer, but I'm not entirely sure about that.

Just look for battery life and weight, more or less. You can always get an external monitor.

In regards to what roy said, it's not that the cpu and graphics card are underclocked, it's that it runs different then Windows. Macs run OpenGL in comparison to Windows with BIOS and DirectX. It's running how it is supposed to as far as I can tell.

What's best of the new dells

Gospy - It's underclocked. Check benchmarks to a comparable system. But this mainly applies to only the Windows side. So if you don't do much gaming, it doesn't really matter. However the soldered pieces matter a lot if one craps out on you.

As far as the new Dell notebook models go, does anybody know how good/bad or simply have an opinion on this one:

http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1210?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19

I'm looking to replace my 2 year old 16'' HP Pavillion, which I've come to realize is much to large and heavy to bring place to place and has ultimately become a replacement to my home PC.

As far as a non-gamer, simply using it for academic purposes, what should I be looking at for memory and hard drive space. I don't want to settle for the bare minimum however I don't want to spend additional hundreds of dollars for memory and hard drive space that will never be utilized.

I have a new MacBook. I've had it for a little over a month now and I love it. It's fast, efficient, and super pretty :)

Hows the heat? Im really starting to consider a macbook but theres so many people online talking about how overly hot the thing can get

Ok, how about instead of the Mac book, how is the Mac Pro???

are gateways any good?

Gateways suck.

Dells suck but they are cheap.

Stay away from first generation Apple products. If you still insist on getting the new Intel Macs, get the black versions or else you'll end up with a yellow computer.

Get a cheap laptop, one that is small, portable, and cheap. That way when you bang it up, lose it, or get it stolen, you won't feel as bad.

I've used an iBook G4 for work for several years. It's white (not yellow at all) and I've had no problems with it.

hes talking about reports that some peoples white macbooks are getting discolored after a few weeks

astro - the bare minimum you will need for academics really depends heavily on what you are going to study. In particulary, if you are going to be taking engineering classes and using a lot of technical software (some of which is more memory hungry than games!), you might consider getting a heftier memory package.
