I ask this as hospitals lay off nurses and other allied health professionals due to funding impacts of the virus. With nurses suddenly being laid off, overtime being cut, etc. will the students who’ve flocked to nursing as a “good job” start to look elsewhere, opening up spots for those who are drawn to the profession itself?
If next year nurses get hit with big unemployment numbers yes I can see people changing their views but I believe it has to be sustained for a while. Fall is too soon to see changes, again in my opinion. Anecdotally my nursing student found a very well paid summer job that included signing bonus but we live in a hot spot so that can explain that. Also anecdotally what I personally saw is that some students changed their minds about the profession not because of possible unemployment but from what they saw on TV about front line health care providers.
