Thinking about transferring to SMU. Need input!

Hi, I'm currently a freshman in college and have been thinking about transferring somewhere closer to home (personal reasons etc.). I'm probably going to major in public relations and I was just wondering how good the program is at SMU's Meadows? Does the program offer a lot of opportunity in Dallas? Is SMU nice? How is the campus, environment, etc.? I've been in the Highland Park area and I have family in Dallas, but I've never actually visited the school but I plan to do so next spring. Any input would be very helpful, thanks! :)>-

@indecisiveteen01: You can ask Sandra Duhe your specific PR questions, she is the Director of the Public Relations department at SMU and her email is sduhe@smu.edu.

Our program is accredited by the ACA and meets all recommendations issued by the National Commission for Public Relations Education. The curriculum comes from a communications perspective that is not exclusively journalistic. Our program is not centered on mass media technology and is oriented more toward internet based communication strategies often associated with social media through common technologies like twitter and more. I believe that there would be internship opportunities available in Dallas.

The SMU campus is gorgeous! It is the perfect size for easily walking between classes, and it feels like you are part of a community and not some giant school where you are a number. We are in the Highland Park area where shops and restaurants are in walking distance, but downtown Dallas is only a five minute drive away. The students here are friendly, driven, and really involved on campus. We have small class sizes and all of our classes are taught by professors, not TAs.

I hope that helps, feel free to ask me any other questions. Definitely come and visit to see for yourself if it’s the right fit :)

@Lilly119‌ Thanks for the contact, I’ll probably be emailing some questions about the major, etc. in the near future! Also, that’s nice to know that classes are taught by the professors, not the TAs! What would you say the average class size is? If I have any other questions, I’ll be sure to ask you, thanks so much!

Average class size at SMU is 25 students. The largest I’ve ever had was 100 students and my smallest only had 14.

Lilly is close but the average class size is actually 22 students! The student faculty ratio is 11:1 so not only will you be in classes taught by professors, you’ll actually know them and they’ll know you! Professors care whether or not you come to class and they care about your experience as a student. Which makes it easier to connect to the material and to be a part of the classroom conversation that builds over the course of a semester (and, quite honestly, makes going to class more fun!).
