Thinking of Transfering

Im currently a DGS student at U of I and wanted to get into mechanical engineering. Unfortunately, I did fairly bad on the my first semester (2.46 GPA) and got C's on all my technical courses. I have spoken with a engineering adviser and they recommended on not doing engineering. They did not even ask about my current performance which has changed from last semester.

I was still planning to stay one more year and still apply even though I know my chances are paper thin. My next college of choice to apply for Mechanical would be UIC.

Several questions;

*Would future employers see that as a step down?
*How much does the college you are graduating from matter in jobs?
*Are there any other schools in Illinois that are good in Mech?

I cannot really leave Illinois because of situations back home. Even going to U of I is a stretch but I was able to manage.

Thanks in advance

Might want to look into Illinois institute if technology

Right now, UIC Engineering would probably not accept you as a potential transfer because your GPA is too low. They require at least a 2.5 GPA. Also, you can’t transfer into UIC until you have 24 hours of credit. If you have less, you have to apply as a freshman.

I was going to transfer at the end of next year if I did not get into ME at U of I. My gpa will be around 3.0 by the end of this semester.

And I will definitely look into IIT. Thanks.

Also another question, does you GPA reset when you transfer? Im pretty sure I heard someone say that credits transfer bu not your grades.

From what I have heard, a 3.0 is the true minimum needed to be considered for transferring at UIC. If you received a grade in the class, I believe, they will add the grade onto the transcript.

The minimum for Mechanical engineering is a 2.5 in state, 2.75 out of state. So I think maybe a 3.0 is a minimum for best consideration?

Does anyone else have their opinions? IIT is a private school so I don’t know if my courses would transfer.

As an IIT transfer student. All your courses should transfer, especially if you are already in Illinois. I transferred from Massachusetts and I got all my credits transferred.

However you should keep in mind that IIT has a very strong and difficult program in engineering, you should be ready to manage the heavy work-load.
