I'm applying to U of I's mechanical engineering program as a transfer student into junior year. I'm applying right after the 2014 fall semester ends and if I get accepted will attend starting the fall of 2015. At the time of application they will see the required courses I have completed (up to Calculus 2 and engineering physics 1, 2 required engineering classes, general chemistry 1 and 2, all liberal arts credits, taking the rest in spring semester of 2015). By the time of application I will have 67 credits. I have 1 C and that is in General Chemistry I and the rest are A's and B's (mostly B's in liberal arts classes and then all A's in math, physics, engineering classes). At the time of application my GPA will be a cumulative 3.50, 3.66 technical. I live in Illinois. I'm African American if that matters (i heard it does, but it doesn't matter to me really). I WILL write a strong essay. Do I have a high chance of getting into the program? i have heard speculation that mechanical engineering requires a 3.8ish to get in and it is competitive for this field, i know that. UIUC tends to be very selective but could my essay change their opinions about me....i appreciate any advice and please give me any constructive criticism on my academic standing if there is. THANKS.

bump, anyone?

can someone please answer…

Nobody can answer that, just apply and see what happens. If you don’t get in, it is not the end of the world, I would try UIC or Illinois Tech.

You should definitely apply to other programs besides UIUC to hedge your bets. Having been involved in admissions at Illinois Tech for a long time, I expect you will be admitted there with no problem and a pretty good financial aid package.

Math-wise, try to complete calculus 3, linear algebra, and differential equations before transferring, so that you won’t have to take them as “catch up” after transferring (which may delay graduation).

Calculus 3: UIUC Math 241, CLC Math 246
Differential equations: UIUC Math 285, CLC Math 227
Linear algebra: UIUC Math 415, CLC Math 225

well i couldn’t care less about illinois tech hence why i never mentioned it. this thread is just opinions whether or not if i can get in or not to UIUC’s mechanical engineering program.

ucbalumnus…i am taking the rest in the spring as i said… so i will complete it before i even transfer
