My school weights honors and AP the same, both 5.0. Many kids take honors rather than AP, get straight A's with hardly any work, and get ranked higher than the rest of us. I'm going to get two B's this semester taking three AP classes (which is alot for my school) so my rank is probably going to drop. Are colleges going to be able to see that I took harder class than my peers?

They will see.

^^ I kind of know what you are going through. They got rid of this after my freshman year because they saw that the honors classes were SIGNIFICANTLY easier.

So, anyways, in my freshman year you had three choices for english. Regular, Advanced, or honors (in this case, the honors was harder, and advanced easier). I had friends in the advanced class who did absolutely nothing, and got A's...i worked my butt off for a B. However, karma, once they got rid of the three-program to two-program, all of those advanced kids were fed into the pre-AP class for sophmore year...and all did terribly because they really didn't learn anything the year before.

colleges should see the difficulty of your classes.

The college admission counselors always say in their presentations that they look at courseload + individual grades much more than class rank. Maybe you could ask your GC to mention that your lower rank is due to the fact that you're challenging yourself?

Once you get to the AP level, there are some classes that are easier than others. BC calc is harder than AB calc. APES is easier than AP Physics. AP World is easier than APUSH. All are weighted the same in every school because they are all AP. You run into these problems no matter what. Then in college, if you are an engineering major, you will probably earn a lower GPA than a sociology major, which hurts when you apply to Law or Business school.

Alot of kids at my school did that senior year. Skipped AP Calculus for Honors, or AP English for Honors. The latters are extremely easy.

yea, i've a 3.93 UW GPA, i'm barely top 10% because everyone's taking easy classes like P.E and cooking classes.

my school does this too. :(

on the other hand, my w rank is top 1.5%, so i hope colleges will see that.

Your GC will send a school profile attached to your transcript that should make it clear that AP and Honors are weighted the same. The GC's rec will probably also address this in the way that she weights the rigor of your classes, and since he/she is doubtless aware of the problem, it may also be mentioned in his/her narrative comments. Finally adcoms at selective colleges have seen every variation of grading, weighting, and ranking scheme; they're pretty good at making sense of it all. They will have a very good sense of your abilities and achievements.

thankyou very much, that makes me feel much better

Were you talking about your mom?

Just kidding.
