I gained 15: in high school, I was an athlete, but freshman year I didn’t start doing anything active until I joined taekwondo 2nd semester. I tried to go out running a few times, but it was difficult to have a consistent workout schedule in the new environment, and I had no one to push me (no team). Then again, I’m 6 ft. and was only 155 lbs, so it’s not like I didn’t have some filling out to do.

I hit the freshman 15 a grand total of three times my freshman year at uni (for just over 45 lbs of weight gain). Was quite happy, actually, as I’d been pretty skinny before. Didn’t change in height any. I’d post before/after pics, but I think that’s against the rules.

For those looking to work out a bit and get stronger, a program like rippetoe’s or madcows would be best. Only 3 days a week and 1 hour a day is needed (though expect that hour to be the most exhausting of your day).

I’m happy that I gained the Freshman “15”, more like Freshman 25. Back in high school, I had trouble gaining weight. First semester, I was pretty skinny, below 130 lbs. But then second semester, I changed my attitude, hit up the gym, and bulked up. By the end of the semester I peaked at 155 lbs, partly due to a GOMAD diet and muscles on top of that. I can’t wait for my second year to start so I can beast out at the gym and truly transform my body.

Even if you can’t play a varsity sport, playing an IM sport or taking classes at the gym are likely good ways to get exercise, too. I’m somewhat concerned about putting on some weight in the winter, though - I’m playing a sport in the fall, and it’ll be warmer, but at my school the winters are really, really cold and I can completely see myself waking up, thinking about the gym, and then just going back to sleep. And ordering pizza and having hot chocolate…oh well.

Freshman year 1st semester, I actually lost weight because of the constant walking I did everyday to my classes/work. I gained 5 pounds 2nd semester because I went to late-night too often: 2 slices of pizza everyday at 11pm was not a good life decision. I stopped doing that fortunately, but I gained the “freshman 15” 2nd semester of sophomore year, haha (probably because of the alcohol thing…oops).
