This is NOT a chance thread

Ever since I found this forum (like a week ago) I've been wanting to do this but then I see many chance threads out there and many of them are kinda dead so I figure people out there must be quite sick of them... and so I decide against posting anything then

But now... now... I can't... can't stop myself

Chance me please.

ED to College of Engineering
Asian Male (Thailand origin)
Attend private boarding highschool in Canada since grade 9

SAT I

CR/MA/WR : 640/770/510 (=1920)

Took the December test. Expecting improvement in Writing section (650 would be nice) English is not my native language

SAT II

Math II : 800
Physics : 650 =(

GPA

Well, system in Canada is different I guess. My school don't calculate GPA. But using A = 4 B = 3.... and using the weighing system that +1 for all the AP courses, I will have roughly

Unweighted: 3.7
Weighted: 3.9

Courses and APs

Took AP Calculus BC (5) and AP Human Geography (4) in grade 11 year

Taking AP Physics C, AP Chemistry, AP Psychology, AP Micro/Macro Economics this year

Predicted grade (by teachers) for this year

English : 90
AP Physics C : 96 (subscore for Physics 12: 100)
AP Chemistry : 96
AP Economics : 96
AP Psychology : 98

My school offers many but not all the APs. I am taking almost all the difficult courses I could have.

Rank

My school don't rank, but I would say I am probably top 10/hundred something

Essays

One of the best piece of writing I ever produce... but then that doesn't really say much... My counsellor says it's wonderful but then she always does.

Reference Letters

One from my math teacher who known me since grade 9.
One from my physics teacher who teachs me for 2 years.
Both are pretty good, I think/guess/hope

Extracurricular:

Not much really. These are ones that Cornell might even look at

First in my school for pretty much all the Math contests last year
Varsity Soccer (2 years)
Business Club (Financial team)
Math Club (2 years)
Admission Council

Others:

My school sends many students to Cornell (4 last year)
I'm first generation
No financial aid needed
I am taking a Math/Engineering university course right now since I finish Calculus BC last year
.....

Thank you in advance for any comments.

You lied! ANOTHER CHANCE ME ....

You lied! ANOTHER CHANCE ME ....

I am just trying my best to make my thread stands out =)

Thank you for your erm... reply anyway

If you ever post your own chance me thread I promise I will say something.

Well, its hard to say because in some places you are great and others you lack. Like, math - YAY! phsyics-uhuh.
I don't know any better than you do, but I do know that the college of engineering looks a lot at scores, and some of yours need some work.
I'm going to say, defferred? maybe.

My poor SAT II Physics score is mainly because all those materials in the test, I am still learning in class right now.

The course load system here is different fron that in US, I guess. Virtually no grade 11 in my school is allowed to take AP Physics or even Physics 12. So back in November when I took the test, I am around 2 chapters into Physics 12 materials (not even half-way through Mechanic section) I basically learn all the Electromagnetism and Thermodynamics by myself, reading through the Princeton Review book in about a week.

Surely Cornell will understand...?

i hope you dont get in

eh no. no offense but your asian and thus it is more difficult for you. your scores are not top caliber either

You're borderline.....SAT scores aren't great for a school like Cornell, but essays, recs, and ECs ( and you didn't really seem too confident in those) will decide your fate.

W.O.W. You BOMBED your SATs except math. You really need to bring them up to AT LEAST 680~700 for an asian (no offense, I'm an asian too) to qualify

@CynicalBliss

Mind me asking why not?

@sweatpants

More difficult? Why?

@Kowloon

Does the fact that English is NOT my native tounge not count at all?

@My poor SATs

Cornell stat from last year
Middle 50% percentile

SAT Critical Reading 620 - 730
SAT Math 660 - 760

Ok even if me being Asian doesn't help. My CR and Math puts me this range and I was under impression that Cornell don't look at Writing as much as the other two. But yes my Writing was very bad and so was my SAT II Physics for reason I provided.

Does GPA matters so little? Because GPA would be my strongest aspect while SAT possibly the weakest.

Anyhow, appreciate all your replies. Now I know what to expect...

you have a shot, what school/major

Engineering/ Engineering Physics (I was actually going to put undecided for major, but thought that might look bad for some reason)

Which part of Canada are you from? (just curious)

British Columbia, west coast

Your CR+ M score is pretty good. But I did hear that a lot of ivyies do count writing scores. So I hope you took December test.

I wish i had your score.... my Cr+M isn't so good.

Good luck

I am not Korean.... never said I was.

Anyway, there's like 24273914 Koreans in my school. Two of them were actually accepted to Cornell on ED last year =)

I did take SAT I again last Saturday but that score doesn't come out until 20 December by which time Cornell would already have made up their mind.

If I am deferred though, maybe it'll help

Good luck to you too

your from BC? me too!

and i know two people that got in cornell from my school too, but they were both chinese...

where in BC? vancouver?

oh yeah... and my school doesn't let you "skip" grades either... and i thought it was just my school. I had to convince them to let me take summer school (online) to "skip" math while University hill let's you take a test and you can skip 2 grades in math and science...

Victoria not Vancouver (lots of rains this couple of weeks)

My school has the Challenge Exam for Math at the beginning of each year, that's how I get to skip 2 years of Math. No such thing for sciences, though.

That seriously damages my SAT II score, I am confident I could have done much better if I learn all the materials a year before.
