As most who read these boards probably know by now, my d graduated from Barnard in 09 and is currently working on her PhD in neuroscience. This semester she is a TA for an advanced undergraduate bio-science-type course at her university (part of her PhD program responsibilities).

She called me tonight to talk and mentioned that she was rather stunned to observe that during the large class (with the prof teaching), mostly only guys asked any questions. That was an entirely new thing to her, and her comment to me was that maybe there still is something to the idea that females don’t speak out in science/math classes when there are guys around. Though there were some guys in her science classes at Barnard, they were in the minority and did NOT monopolize the discussion.

Just one more clear indicator for her that Barnard was her “perfect fit” school.

Any other graduates or current students have any similar experiences to share as to why Barnard is/was perhaps uniquely suited for them?
