This Is Us. Anyone watching?

A couple of you have mentioned that Kevin and Beth’s cousin are on their way to Vietnam. How do you know this? What did I miss?! Thanks

At the very end of the show they showed flash forwards. One of them was those two on a plane heading towards Vietnam. I believe it showed Kevin kissing her forehead or something like that.

Supposedly Chrissy Metz was cast because of the director or producer’s sister is someone who struggles with weight. Her line about worrying no one would know she was pregnant because she is so big came right from his sister who suggests story lines for Metz. Also the teen who plays Kate and Metz have the same agent. They knew each other before they were cast. She says she studied Metz’s mannerisms and has included them into her performance which is why she seems like such a good fit. The youngest Kate has such big cheeks, I think she’s perfect. Don’t know where they found her.

Must suck to be Miguel. LOL.

@preppedparent I am new to the thread so maybe this was mentioned before but the girl who plays teenage Kate is actually the daughter of Olympic gymnast Julianne McNamara. I agree she is extremely good in the part and has a brilliant future ahead of her.

I’m glad to be moving past the Jack dying thing. While it has shaped their lives it has always seemed a bit off that it’s still so fresh and prominent in their lives this many years later.

I’m also worried about the health of Chrissy Metz, if anything she looks like she gained weight this year. Knowing how I felt after losing weight, she just can’t be comfortable or healthy. However, she’d obviously have lost the weight already is she was able to, so there must be something she’s dealing with personally as well. I hope now she gets some kind of support and encouragement to lose the weight, which would also make sense from her characters point of view. But in the flash forward she’s still the same size so obviously nothing happens next season with her weight.

I looked up a recipe for Banana Pudding Ice Cream (Kate’s favorite–the one she wanted for her wedding to remind her of Jack). It’s bananas and crushed vanilla wafers swirled into a rich vanilla ice cream. Sounds delicious but high calorie. Put some whipped cream on top and what a dessert!

I think it’s been reported plenty that Chrissy Metz isn’t wearing any prosthetics to play Kate (unlike the actor who plays Toby). As I understand it, the original idea was that she was going to lose weight as part of the story arc of the series, and she agreed to do that, but one way or another it didn’t work, and it’s hard to fire one of the two female leads in a successful series.

In any event, because the actress playing Kate can’t just take off her fat suit to film a promo, I don’t think you can read a lot into having her be the same size in the next-season promo, which of course was filmed this season.

I feel like I’m gossiping and being mean but I’ll ask. Chrissy Metz seems to be horrendously out of proportion large in her stomach area. I’ve noticed her full body shots when she’s wearing like leggings and her leg size does not match her body size. Nor do her arms really. So I wonder if she has PCOS in which ladies tend to overgain in the abdominal area, right? For her health sake, obviously, I wish she’d lose some but just for comfort sake. I can’t imagine that, there I said it.

I know I’ve thought those things when I watch her. How hard it must be to just sit. Going to the restroom, what a chore that must be. She’s the largest woman I have ever seen. How hard it must be on her heart.

For some reason, I was very moved when Jack, intuiting that he would die before Rebecca, made her promise not to put him in the ground. That, coupled with the fact that we’ve never seen Jack visit his brother’s grave, made me wonder whether his little brother was a tunnel rat in Vietnam whose body was never recovered after a fatal tunnel explosion. Or maybe Jack was in the tunnels himself and just hated the thought of ever being underground again.

I, too, think the teen-Kate casting was a boon to the show, and teen Kate is an awesome actor!

Poor Miguel during the wedding toast! How long until the next season starts?

The next season likely begins in mid-late September. I will forget about 90 percent of what happened by then!

I thought this might interest to This is Us fans. Last night I attended a writer’s event where the two young co-showrunners, Isaac Apataker and Elizabeth Berger spoke. They’re in their early 30s, but look so much younger. They seemed very grateful and intelligent. They met at NYU and been writing together ever since. Isaac said his mom was the only person outside of the show who knew how Jack died, because she saw the card on the writer’s room wall-but she kept the secret. The slow cooker was chosen because they thought it was something you take out on special occasions, which I thought was funny-I use mine all the time. Two stories they debated in the writers room, Kate’s miscarriage and Deja’s mom leaving her. They hadn’t planned on doing an entire Deja episode, but the actress is so good, and fans loved her. They do read twitter and laugh about some of the conspiracy theories. The writers regret the Jack drunk driving “fake out”, said they see why people were upset. They planned on doing “the big three” college stories as one episode, but realized they couldn’t fit everything so they broke it into three parts (they should have read CC!) They know who “her” is but didn’t say of course!

@basil1, thanks for the post! That’s really cool you got some inside scoop!

Thanks, basil1. “Her”? Are they the only 2 writers? I would guess there are more.

I think ‘her’ refers to when Randall and Tess are talking about going to see ‘her’.
Speculation as to whether it was Beth or Deja.

Chrissy Metz was just featured on the cover of People Magazine. She shared the story of her step-father’s abuse and the toll it took on her. I think she’s fabulous. So glad she’s comfortable in her own skin and can help others to do the same. She’s a true star.

There was a great long interview with Chrissy Metz on NPR a couple weeks ago. https://www.npr.org/2018/04/10/600810097/this-is-us-star-chrissy-metz-retraces-her-journey-from-agent-to-actress. After hearing that, I put myself on the hold list at the library for her book.

No, the show has between 10-15 writers.
