Could the football player be Deja’s relative? Or will he somehow be connected to her? I was trying to figure him out, too. I thought the introduction of the football player and then the scene with Deja in the sporting goods store were connected somehow. I love how the show will throw in a new character/family and make us instantly engaged.
I felt like since he had made such a big play and that it was brought up throughout the “first date” evening that maybe that was the extent of the connection.
Yeah – I thought the whole Franco Harris bit was the parallel between the Immaculate Reception and (a) Rebecca falling for Jack, (b) Deja deciding to let Randall and Beth adopt her, and © the doctor taking Kate and Toby on as patients. The only thing that made me think it might mean more was the brief shot of him coming home to what looked like a working-class house in Pittsburgh after the game. Not sure about that – it didn’t completely make sense.
I know I’m in the minority, but I continue to not like the Kate character at all. I cringe when she is on the screen. It’s more than just the morbid obesity- it’s her whole personality.
Last night certainly wasn’t her finest moment, when she didn’t even bother to look at Toby to see how he was reacting before deciding to go through the IVF process, within minutes of being told how not into it he was. And her long birthday whine – what a perfect way to thank the friends who are trying to celebrate you!
I thought the “thread” linking so many seemingly unrelated events, in the episode, focuses on “those magical” moments which can become “life changing”.
Franco Harris magical, amazing catch is one for the record books. Steelers fans of that era must remember where they were when that happened.
( that scene reminded me of “good will hunting " when Will misses an epic World Series game because he had to go see about a girl” )
"January 12, 1975 he was the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl IX; in that game he rushed for 158 yards and a touchdown on 34 carries for a 16-6 win over the Minnesota Vikings. **Harris was the first African American as well as the first Italian-American to be named Super Bowl MVP. " **
Another life changing -
Jack and Rebecca meet.
Deja and her decision to be adopted.
Kate and the Drs phone call.
(Side note enjoyed the Nike sneaks given the entire drama with Nike backing Colin Kaepernick ) ?
Did anyone else think it was odd that Jack and Rebecca would be going to an outdoor carnival in Pittsburgh in JANUARY and not even wear warm coats??
I can forgive a lot of other mistakes in logic (a doctor calling her patient physically back into the office 2 hours later? Really?) but the whole climate inconsistencies really scream “we are writers in southern California and we have no idea what the rest of the nation is like!”
I had issues with weather last season as well. They should’ve made the Pearsons Pirates fans instead & then all the less than winter like weather wouldn’t be so glaring.
The Immaculate Reception wasn’t at a Superbowl. It was a playoff game on December 23. Of course, it might well be cold in Pittsburgh on December 23, too. But, you know, even back in 1972 sometimes it rained in December in Pittsburgh instead of snowed. If you look at the footage of the game, there’s no snow or ice around the stadium. People are wearing coats, but they’re not excessively bundled up.
Franco Harris being a real person makes it highly unlikely to me that he’s going to be incorporated into the lives of fictional characters. He was there to set the mood with the Immaculate Reception. I dated a Steelers fan so I know all about the Immaculate Reception, unfortunately.
They interviewed the characters on some talk show yesterday, and Chrissy Metz didnt do such a good job of being cagey as to where here character was that they were going to visit (it did sound like she was acknowledging that Toby was going to visit her). So something is up there.
I didnt quite see what kind of store Deja’s bio father was a clerk at, when she went to see him. Was he in a sporting goods store and thats where she got the bikes (she said she had “connections”) or is that where Franco Harris plays in?
It was a sporting goods store and her bio dad got her the shoes - remember, she said she had one thing to ask of him and then she would leave him alone. Franco Harris is a different story line.
I was surprised that Rebecca didn’t know anything about the football game. I thought she was a big fan! So I guess their mutual love of the Steelers developed later.
I loved the conversation between Beth and Kevin where it became clear that she was worried about Zoe hurting him.
My theory is that “her” will end up being Rebecca. If it were Kate, I don’t think Tess would be so emotional. If it were Beth, I can’t see Randall calling Toby. Kate could be at her mother’s bedside and it could be awkward if she and Toby are divorced. It’s possible Kate is the health care proxy and it is time for a difficult decision and they all need to say goodbye.
I’m stockpiling boxes of tissues for the rest of the season.
Jack looks so cute and young without all that facial hair and greasy hair. My fav part was when the soon to be adopted daughter (terrible with names), was telling her bio Dad how “these people think she’s exceptional “.
aarrgghhh autocorrect— she (deja) got the NIKES not the bikes!
Dh was commenting on how young they made Jack look.
There was quite a build up as to the risks Kate would be taking with in vitro, given her weight. It seems something happened to her in the future.
Looks like there’s going to be alot about Vietnam. Yay, want to see more of Milo for sure. Is that Mandy Moore’s real voice or is it dubbed? If that’s her, she’s quite a singer.
It will break my heart if they give Kate some devastating consequences from her invitro. She is one of the few truly overweight characters on TV and I think a lot of people are closely identifying with her. Its one thing if they don’t let her have a baby, but if they let this destroy her, I think I will never forgive them.
Agree. ^^^Love Chrissy Metz. She seems to emote genuinely. She’s the most credible and the best actress on the show in my opinion.
