This Is Us. Anyone watching?

I’m pretty sure that’s Mandy Moore’s real voice. I knew her as a singer before I heard she acted.

Mandy Moore was a singer first. She toured with NSYNC and The Backstreet Boys when she was 15!

Yes, Mandy Moore could go back to singing in a heartbeat.

I am so intrigued to see how/if the football story remains a storyline piece.

I’m going to throw in some love for Kevin again in this episode and how great he is with Beth and Randall’s kids. (I know, except the one time in the car…)

I actually like Jack with the slicked hair better!

I hope that the show is super real about the high risks for someone of Kate’s weight/condition to being pregnant. The show is so influential right now I do want them to paint things someone realistically. I suspect the drugs down the drain will play out in a “not ok to do this” way in future episodes. So while it happened, they will show why it should NOT.

I wish Chrissy Metz would have bariatric surgery. My first cousin gained weight over 20 years and died of complications at 41 due to not being able to fight an infection in the hospital due to the fat. He died st almost 500 lbs. I have a very close friend who had it done a year ago. He was at 380. He’s lost about 100 and looks great, feels ecstatic and want to get to 200.

Bariatric surgery is a difficult decision. I have two friends who had the same surgery at nearly the same time. One has gone on to lose significant weight. It is difficult work. She watches her diet rigidedly and exercises religiously. The surgery was certainly no free pass. But it was life changing for her. The other lost weight at first and since gained all of it back. She now has all the complecations and difficulties of having had the surgery and none of the benefit. Sadly, this is not uncommon. There is also the risk of very serious complications.

I hope that Chrissy Metz is getting excellent medical care whatever choice she makes.

I find I don’t love/enjoy Kate as much as the others - though I do enjoy Toby - or appreciate him.

Not to keep on about Kate’s weight but its the sort of thing where this IS a major part of her storyline but even more importantly this IS her real life. She is so, so, SO overweight that I would have to think you would be hard pressed to not see this as a life hardship and it’s true, it can often be hard to NOT focus on the weight. Sad perhaps, but true.

Also goes to show that $$ can’t buy everything - even weight loss.

I hope we don’t have to wait all season to see who is in that room/hospital/whatever! It could be so many people. Though we know it’s a “she” and “she” has a connection to Toby. Could even be his and Kate’s child.

How does everyone feel about Deija? Don’t you sort of want to say, “Girl! Sign the papers, join the family! They are head over heels over you!”

The girl who plays Deija is an incredible actress. Sometimes I watch her and feel like I can hear what’s going on in her head when she’s not even speaking. I think she’s one of my favorite characters.

Agree Deja is a great actress. They’re all good. I’ve always loved Sterling K. Brown starting back when he was a psychiatrist in Army Wives. He’s so talented.

For all of us Sterling K. Brown fans, his 2018 Stanford commencement address was a gift:

https://news.stanford.edu/2018/06/22/video-alumnus-sterling-k-brown-delivers-2018-stanford-commencement-address/

Fun fact (that you probably already know): SKB started acting at Stanford in a Lanford Wilson play where met his wife, Ryan Michelle Bathe; she had a small role in This is Us early on as Yvette, the African American mother at the swimming pool that made a comment to Rebecca about cutting Randall’s hair. She was was also in Army Wives.)

And I agree that Deja is a tremendous actor. I think all of the young actors are superb (teenage Kate and Randall, especially). In fact, there isn’t a single actor on that show – child or adult – whose acting I don’t admire.

I don’t think it’s Kate in the hospital (at least not due to in vitro). Tess is still young when Kate starts IVF; to me, given that Tess had to age at least 10 years, the timeline doesn’t seem right. It’s also too much of a “telegraph” in the way they’ve written the show. It’s too obvious; there’s got to be a different twist to it.

No comments yet on this weeks episode?

I love Randall. His statement about how he can never get it right made my heart break for him. He tries so hard.

I hated Kate so much in this episode. I don’t even know what to say. I started out with so much empathy for her. But she acts as if she is the only person to struggle with weight and infertility and as if that gives her the right to lash out at everyone around her. How dare she say she is the only one who can pass on a part of her Dad. How dismissive of both of her brothers. I could rant more but I would probably write something I would regret.

Did I miss anything after the lights went out in the theater, right after Kevin told Randall that Kate made that comment about their dad? We had wicked storms that night and my DVR cut off right as the lights cut!

Randall was visibly upset after hearing Kate’s comment. I can’t say I blame him. After all these breaks between shows, this show somehow manages to suck me right in again.

As someone who grew up w/both bio and adopted siblings and has an extended family in which about 20% are adoptees…Kate’s comments and Randall’s reaction were so REAL. Kate isn’t trying to hurt Randall. She’s just making what to her is an objective comment. She’s the only one who is likely to pass on her dad’s actual genes. Randall can’t do that. Remember: she did NOT say it TO Randall. She said it to Kevin and it is one more indication of just how clueless Kevin is that he repeated her remark to Randall.

I’m “into” genealogy and tried to get all of my cousins on one side to send me the names, birth dates, etc. of their kids and grandkids. It was interesting to see how differently my cousins with adopted kids reacted. One basically threatened me if I DARED to mention the fact that her children are adopted on the family tree I created (accessible only to family members). Another wants her children’s birth names listed on their entries.

@NJWrestlingmom - the only thing you might have missed was some superb acting from Sterling K. Brown, in a hauntingly painful final image.

I, too, am losing sympathy for Kate – she’s quite the narcissist. What a hurtful thing to say. Not only is the remark thoughtless with respect to Randall, but how is Kevin supposed to feel being told that he’s a loser that probably will never meet the right person and have kids?

I’m with the people who don’t like Kate anymore – but I must say I find it refreshing to see an overweight woman who is not cast as “the funny one” or “everyone’s best friend/confidant”
