Finally watched the last episode and made me cry. But I don’t think Nick’s explanation would have cut it. My first through was OMG he didn’t grab the kid, but jumped out himself. I think that is what ruined his life, thinking he might have actually saved the boy. And that may have been what Jack could not forgive. I don’t think Jack thought Nicky intentionally killed the boy, just that he was doing something that he was responsible. But why Jack had to be so unforgiving, even after he had a family of his own is still a question. Also agree that the war itself was the root cause of Nicky’s ruin.
Tonight’s episode has sent me into an emotional tailspin.
I forgot it was going to be on! I don’t know how to watch broadcast network TV anymore.
I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I kept dozing off. I’ve read two interpretations about what happened near the end. Hmmm…
I turned it on late and then got interrupted and turned it off. Can anyone do a quick recap?
I liked the episode but the end with Kevin was heartbreaking. Here is a good recap for those who missed it: https://www.vulture.com/2019/02/this-is-us-recap-season-3-episode-12.html
Haven’t watched the latest episode yet, but it’s an addiction! Feel like the show is quite manipulative and some of the story lines get tired, but just can’t stop watching…
That vulture recap was so great! Griffin Dunne was amazing! Watch this episode
Griffin Dunne is too amazing and now the acting is unbalanced. Milo V. can hold his own in scenes with GD, but the rest cannot. Although I suspect Sterling Brown will if he ever has a substantive scene with GD.
It’s probably just me, but I thought last night’s episode was the slowest going yet. Very little happened and too much was made of the sequin fight and Pearson Pizza. The sequin fight was extolled about 100 x. I get it, parents try to pack more good than bad into their children’s memories of childhood, but gag me, I don’t want to hear the word sequin again. C’mon TIU, you gotta give us more. Too slow…agonizingly so.
The Vulture tidbits at the end were the best. I watched the episode tonight and was laughing out loud about the pizza order :))
I really liked the episode. I thought a lot happened. I agree that Griffin Dunne is amazing.
@tx5athome I’ve come to rely and appreciate Vulture.com tv recaps. I read them for The Americans, True Detective, This is Us, Outlander. I always find I’ve missed a detail and enjoy the recaps.
^^ Same here. The comments are sometimes pretty interesting, as well.
I thought this was a great episode and very moving. Did not seem slow to me and liked the focus on Jack being veyr upset, but able to do something silly with the kids. So sad to see Kevin at the end but hope it is just a small slip.
I thought the writers did a good job that what we remember is not always the whole truth. The whole episode sort of told us how Jack wasn’t perfect, not the Saint Jack that has been the narrative before. That he had made judgments that weren’t all that wonderful and had moments where he wasn’t the best most patient dad and husband.
But in the midst of some frankly not very nice behavior, and the family finding out that he kept secrets from them. He did have those moments that were wonderful and the person that they choose to remember.
Now as a mom, who left her kids with her husband who made a huge mess, I wouldn’t and didn’t react like Rebecca when I came home to find the house in shambles. Jack neglected the kids for most of the day and then instead of helping clean things up, he made things worse. I would have remembered that, and known that I would have been the one to clean it up. But Jack was the fun parent and the kids remembered that.
I didn’t think the episode was slow and for me, one of the best of the season. I hope we get to see Griffin Dunne again.
I enjoy this show but get annoyed every time they portray Pittsburgh as being balmy in the winter. Last night Jack was lifting weights in the garage with the garage door open! Granted we do have some mild days on occasion, more now then ever, but come on!
I get annoyed at the winter weather in Pittsburgh too. They do a good job of recalling Pittsburgh sports of the era, but totally miss on the weather. Not sure why that annoys me, but it does.
And there were leaves on the trees!
Do you ever stop and just let yourself fall over thinking what if this happened to you??? I cannot even imagine. Sure we’d want it to be all rainbows and magic but the circumstances just about guarantee that is not going to happen. Imagine how devastating this would be if it happened to you! It would just be so sad to lose such a beloved dad and find that his brother is his polar opposite, just when you’re possibly hoping for a new close relationship with him. Yeah…dad substitute, I’ll just say it.
And it’s obvious Jack made the decision to never tell. Even Rebecca. Even in their perfect marriage. Most couples would absolutely share this. So, not to share it, yeah. Obvious. He did not want Nick around his family, in his life.
