This kid also got into Penn, NO JOKE

i think you have an excellent chance..

LOL ready to get rejected matthew?

a girl from my school got into penn with a 3.7 out of 5 gpa, 500-somethings in verbal and math on her sats. because she was a legacy. sucks, no? (she was also not a nice person.)

This goes to show that the school you are applying from is very important, but is one of the most overlooked in chances threads etc.

Even though the guy was only in the top 30% of his class, etc., his SATs were pretty stellar. It makes me worry that a big part of his acceptance was because of his scores (regardless of what Penn claims). Thoughts?

P.S.- His GPA is solid nonetheless. What difference does it make if he needs FA or not? Isn't Penn need-blind?

I think that we place way too much importance on class rank here on CC. if you look in the princeton review website, they post the importance of different factors for admissions:

Secondary school record - Very Important
Class rank - Considered
Recommendations - Very Important
Standardized test scores - Important
Essays - Very Important

Interview - Considered
Extracurricular activities - Important
Talent / ability - Considered
Character / personal qualities - Very Important
Alumni/ae relation - Considered
Geographical residence - Considered
State residency - Not Considered
Religious affiliation/commitment - Not Considered
Minority status - Considered
Volunteer work - Considered
Work experience - Considered

Eckie, I think it all depends on what we consider to be a decent class rank. Some say that merely being in the top 5% is not good enough while others feel that anything lower than the top 10% is basically a rejection.

Class rank is important, but it's not the be all end all. However, statistics show that being in the top 5% is the way to be.

Testing (GPA, SAT, SAT IIs etc.) accounts for 40% of the app according to the dean of admissions, so scores definitely count.

There are some prestigious schools where the top 50% of students get into Ivys or equivalents, that's what I mean by the importance of HS you are coming from, its reputation and track record with schools.

FA wouldn't be directly relevant, and don't obviously know if this is the case with this person but (especially at a top NYC prep school )could be linked to hooks like first generation college, blue collar background, single parent household , English as second language or recent immigrant status to country, all of which could be seen as hooks.

So in this case, FA is a good thing, since he's not a wealthy kid with everything handed to him on a silver platter.

oh, I did mean to say that princeton review info was strictly the Penn stats.

KRabble - Yes, that's what I was suggesting.

I went to TonyLukes when I was up at Penn... very surprised: it was excellent! A great substitute for Pat's when you can't get down there!

so drop65 is matthew park... son, i was in your ct class in junior high.

yo, harvardman, what hr were you in, 73? 72?

and you would be?

The OP must feel like an a##hole right now.

lol? why?

Let's see....you chastized the decision in a pretentious manner, while outright lying about the actual resum

before you accuse me of anything please understand the facts

i posted all that with the permission of the student as a joke to relieve stress. loosen up.

Right, because I am supposed to know this....apologies.
