A pretty good friend of mine got into Penn last year on Early Decision. These were his stats:

1300 SAT’s (not kidding - 650 Math, 650 Verbal)
4.0 GPA, but the only advanced coursework he took were College Pre-Calculus and College Writing and Composition.

He did a couple plays, and his essay was about Oyster Farming. He never played sports.
Small high school, 400-500 kids. Oregon coast. He’s Portuguese American, if that matters. No one in his family had ever gone to Penn. I don’t think he even visited the campus, and I’m pretty sure he went in as an undeclared major.

I just thought that might be some comforting information for people who were stressing about their application chances. I swear to God I’m not lying about this kid.

portuguese american is not recognized as urm. so throw that one out the window. a portuguese american is no more a urm than a french american... duh. ;)

It's the orgeon hook. Imagine how many kids could possibly apply to Penn from Oregon. That started him off and the oyster farming essay definitely put him at the top. If he wrote a good essay about why he wanted to be at Penn...that put him over the edge.

Actually if you live in D.C. it's the best place to apply to. Not many people know this, but you get in-state tuition from any college/university in the USA if you live in D.C.
