Anyway my friend is a really smart kid, but somewhere in highschool freshman year he lost all drive and it took him until sophmore year to realize what he was doing.......I'm not going to give you his life story. Anyway right now he is probably sitting on a 3.0 to 3.2 GPA and wanted to know if he should even bother applying to his dream school Georgetown. He is going to the LeadAmerica CSLC this summer and will be visitng Georgetown while he is there. He's worked for Summer Recreation programs, attended Brown University's Summer High School and is a varsity football athelete. Also he is routinely a worship leader at church. Not including the writing section he only score a 1230 on the SAT and that pretty much crushed his morale. Believe when I tell you he has the drive and is one of those kids that everyone would be surprised to hear isn't top 10 to 15% of the class.......I believe his essay can show that. I told him that GW would probably be a better match, but his bent on Georgetown. He also the only child of African immigrant parents and is lower middle class I guess......if that helps at all.

Your friend should definitely apply if G-town is his dream school. Although he doesn't have stellar stats, he has a lot going for him. He has good extra-currciulars and if he writes some killer essays, he should be fine. I would also recommend applying EA; it would be indicative of his interest in the school. Moreover, he's a URM-that's tons of points! BTW, Im going to G-town this fall, Im African-American, and I scored a 1670 on the SAT. Although I had a 3.7 GPA, which may have compensated for my mediocre SAT score, your friend still has a good shot. I think the committee is just looking for a well-rounded student. Best of luck to your "friend" and I would love to know how everthing goes.

Your friend sounds a lot like you.

You haven't revealed much as to why the academic GPA is so low (in comparison to the standard GU applicant). If you want to try for a shot at Georgetown, raise the SAT score to a competitive level. URM only counts if the applicant is qualified in comparison to other members of the student body.

First off, I am a junior who will be applying EA to GU this coming year.

No offense, but I dont think a great essay explaining why " your friend/you/whomever" got bad grades becasue of lack of interest and motivation will increase your chances of being admitted.

Its not like georgetown doesnt have any other URMs( what does that stand for?) and minority's applying, with much better stats, who were motivated throughout their tenure in highschool for them to just pick this guy. I dont think that would help as much as expected ( if at all).

The GPA is pretty low, even if the person took AP's and honors classes ( ex: person in my HS had 7 ap classes, 6 honors, 3.9 uw gpa, 1380 on sats, and pretty good EC's, was rjected).

Is this person good enough to get recruited for football?

also, George Washington U is by no means an easy school to get into with those stats.

Overall, I wish whomever is applying the best of luck, and hopefully we will both be able to see each other on the hilltop one day...

Losing his drive for no legitimate reason such as a family death is NOT an excuse for low GPA. He needs to get his SAT up and write a tremendous essay. It doesn't hurt to try.

I'm a junior whose applying EA this coming fall. Best luck to you all and as Abdulk said, I hope that we'll all be able to see each other on the hill top in the Fall of 07.

No my friend is not me......I want to go to UMich. Anyway, I didn't say his essay would be about how he lost motivation or anything I was giving some backgground info..he's a great writer I'm sure he can do better. You all are just confirming what I told him. However I think it's more than numbers. He'll find out when he applies there. Oh and he lives in RI and no one scouts football outside of RI. My friend has all the potential in the world and his numbers don't shot that. Seeing how he had a 78 freshman (horrible slacking) 90 sophmore year and even higher this year I believe. His essay will be great I can count on that and so will his recs. We'll see what happens though. I was looking at stats and and Georgetown did have been in his range even thought he number is low. Maybe I'm defending him because I'm his friend and I know his drive....whatever we'll see next year.

BTW, he lost his drive more as a stupid (yes very stupid) way of rebelling and proving a point that everyone needed to back off. He was expected to be the golden child all his life and a B+ was considered and F....he got tired of it. Not to say that death there were not deaths of his grandfather, older cousin and her mother a long the way. Also the fact that his family is a bunch of underachievers and all eyes are on him and if he doesn't do great things then everyone will frown on him.

Man I had a lot of typos.

Some similarities:
"Both" of you attended Brown Sumer HS
"Both" of you live in Providence, RI
You've stated interest in attending Georgetown.
Have expressed a desire "not" to be the golden child.

I'm not admonishing you for fun or out of cruelty, I just prefer honesty. We can only help if we know the truth; there's no need to hide identity. If your friend is really in need of assistance, then have him come on CC so we can ask him certain questions.

def. apply.....but u really need to explain
that low gpa

First off I find it funny that you needed to search for everything I have ever said. Secondly well if he's my friend then odds are we live in the same city. How many people in California have best friends in Maine? We go to Classical High School which gave us the option as freshman to go to Brown Summer High School....I suggest you know more about my state before you question me. Go look at the majority of my posts if it's that big of a deal and and it's probably in the UMich forum. Anyway he's kind of disgruntled after hearing about how you all think he has no chance. How would he explain the GPA anyway? Maybe the GC could explain it....in her recommendation. He has probably the nicest GC Mrs. Edwards who likes him so we'll see.

no just explain how he found his calling later upward trend blah blah blah

Well, Just to follow up my friend visited Georgetown this summer and didn't like the look of the place. The guide didn't really let his group go inside the buildings he tells me, but the outer appearance he wasn't fond of. Also, he noticed that most of the people appeared pretty preppy and he's far from that. (We're from the Southside of Providence, RI.....not the East Side...no preps around here) So now he doesn't know if he'd even like it there and if it is diverse in anyway. He also checked out GW while he was there and it seemed to like it. BTW, my school doesn't calculate GPA and everyone keeps giving me different numbers so does anyone know how to convert GPA?
