This recession stinks!! Emory v. UT!!!

okay so i have to decide b/w Emory and UT,my state school (stepdads looking for a job, life sucks right now so money is important)

Emory is an awesome school and i'm getting 41K grants and 2K workstudy as well as 5500 in loans. i'm also premed so i don't know if undergrad matters all that much...

UT is giving me 21K (thats around 1-2K i'll have to pay, covered by subsidized loan) and i have a shot at a full ride (i find out if i get it this week); plus its really near where I live so thats a plus and i get in state tuition (CHEAP, CHEAP!!) & UT is a pretty good school...

i'm SO CONFUSED :( helppp :D

UT. All the way.

I had to make the same decision. I chose Emory.

TexasStar- how was your fin aid at both schools?

parents say they will take loans out. but i love UT as much as EMory…

Emory2013: would you say UT bc of the fin reasons?

Well, UT gave me all loans, while Emory gave me the college grant, along with 5,500 in loans, which was pretty decent. Overall, I liked Emory’s finaid the most. And I also liked what Emory offered in general, academic-wise, and how you don’t have to declare a major there until much later, unlike UT.

TexasStar:well financially, UT is better for me (i got some 10% scholarship & another merit scholarship along with some grants). i’ll have to take out around 9k in loans at emory.

anybody else stuck in a similar situation?

“but i love UT as much as EMory…”

To me, there is your answer. It would be different if you didn’t love UT.

9k/yr in loans at Emory or overall?

If overall I’d probably say Emory but if per year that is 36k deferred for four years…with interest who knows how much that could end up being.

I’d have to take out around the same amount in loans as you, versus a full ride (almost…) at Tulane. Unless Emory changes it to around 5k or less a year in loans I’ll be at Tulane where my parents can afford to get me a good laptop and send me money if I need it.

I wish it was 9K overall!!! if it was, i would totally have made my decision. but its 9k over four years, adding up to 36K. thats a whole lot of money versus almost a full ride to UT.

people are telling me that i shouldn’t let this oppurtunity go, but I really am so confused.

oh no, UT all the way. 36k in loans (which that is if you pay off the interest, when you have it deferred it will even be harder).

that makes payments like 300-400 a month for 10 years, without the interest. that is like paying for a car that you cant drive + paying for an actual car if you get one + grad school etc.

You would need to make at least 36k right out of college each year to cover that, at least that is what people say. However, you have to realize that it could be well over 50k…and 50k a year jobs right out of college are hard to find anywhere + grad school it really is too much. If it were in the 10-20k range, maybe, but at 36-50k it really just isn’t worth it.

Go to UT and be happy there, if you still are reallllllly set on Emory, then try to transfer out in your junior or sophomore years, that knocks off a lot of debt and makes it much more manageable.

^^ thats exactly my train of thought. but my parents feel bad because i don’t want them to feel burdened by the loans (and i don’t want them either!)

i mean my oldest cousin (who is more like a sister) said she wants to pay for me the first year. and she wants to buy me a car, but i can’t depend on her word and go to Emory. its just too much of a risk.

9k a year is nothing holy hell i envy you

if you love them both, it sounds like UT might be the best option because of financial aid and the closeness to home (assuming you would still live on campus, which is an essential part of the college experience)

but agree that when you said UT felt like a bit of a better fit, that really tells it all. Go with the place where you feel the best at, im sure there are a few exceptions but your instincts about a school are very important in the college process

Emory Class of '13!!! :)

Congrats on your decision - what finally did it for you?

Im interested in hearing your process, because my Son is deciding btween Pitt Full Tuition Scholarship or Cornell-

Economic woes vs missing out have him trapped…

How are you preventing the second thoughts from creeping in?..

Due to the current economy and the huge decline in many people’s 529 plans, I think the good state schools are going to see a much better yield from their top applicants than they had in the past – in case the peer group is factoring into the decision. I bet most would take the full tuition to Pitt vs paying the full amount to cornell unless finances are really not an issue.

I’m actually in the exact same boat as you were.

Deciding between Emory and UT (my state school) which I somehow by some work of god got into both from the waitlist… it seems the financial aid package will have to decide since my family and my college savings got literally raped by both Hurricane Ike and Katrina :

you know honestly i was all set on Emory on May 1st. But i felt something bad in my stomach, and I knew i was making a mistake. Honestly, I wasn’t ready to go home, so at literaly the last minute I decided on UT. I stand by decision despite the fact that Emory is indeed a better school. And if I want, I can transfer- we’ll see. Right now I feel pretty content :)

Visited Emory today and loved the campus, but I’m still so unsure of what to do. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

Right now I’m having a ridiculously hard time trying to decide between UT and Emory which I have full rides to both so money is not an issue.

I’m going into business and UT is ranked 8th while Emory is 22nd in undergrad business programs according to US News/World Report (Emory 8th/UT 9th businessweek).
I heard Emory’s social life isn’t exactly spectacular, while UT is one of the most fun schools in the nation. I’m into partying and all that, and I’ve been to UT and had a blast.

Since UT apparently has a better if not equal business school to Emory, I don’t see why I should attend Emory over UT especially if it’s going to be less fun. I’m all about my future and putting education first, but I also want “the” college experience, and Emory doesn’t seem to be that much better academically. The only thing that Emory seems to have on UT is that the classes are much smaller and the facilities are very nice.

But then again Emory is very prestigious and I definitely want the best for myself and my future. I’m willing to work hard but want to have fun at the same time. If Emory had a higher ranked/better business school than UT I would go there in a heartbeat, but as it stands now at least how I’m seeing it, I really do not know what to do.

Any advice? Thanks a lot CC.

For the record, I doubt McCombs will top Goizueta in the rankings in the long run.

But on a more serious note, they are totally different B-schools. At Emory you’ll get 2 years of top-notch liberals arts before even entering the business school. Personally, I think this is extremely useful as it allows for exploration and well-roundedness. In fact, some social science classes (like philosophy) may even be more useful to a businessman than many business courses.

See this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/emory-university/458507-undergrad-emory-goizueta-vs-ut-austin-mccombs.html

Unless you’re dead set on a traditional business school education, Emory has certain undeniable advantages. Also, unless you need to be drunk every night, the social scene at Emory will most likely suffice. Talk to some current students, they’ll tell you they’ve “been there and done that.”
