This site makes me want to kill myself

thank you for the informative post. i've started to face reality that i'm not going to be able to compete in the top 10/ivy league schools in the country, but wasn't really set on attending those in the first place. I've done a lot of thinking on where I want to go, and what would be the best environment for me. I've also been looking at a lot of colleges, and visiting on school breaks.

I think i've narrowed it down to:

lehigh
boston u
tulane
georgia tech
uva
jmu

some (a lot) of these may be reaches, but hopefully i'll be able to get into one of my reaches, and i have jmu there as a safety.

Make sure that you follow the first rule of applying to colleges: "Love thy safety." Only apply to JMU if that's a place where you'd be happy going. If not, find another safety. And of course, make sure that you definitely know that you can afford your safety. Check with your parents to find out how much they're willing to pay for your college education. This will help you avoid heartbreaking surprises spring of senior year.

getting into a college is something u should never worry about..
considering many schools in the USA are open-enroll to local students in most situations..

To the OP: As a fellow junior, I know what you mean... the "what are my chances?" threads can be quite discouraging at first. But keep in mind that a)these stats are probably embellished and b) that you do not know these people at all. They could be pompous bastards who can't seem to get over themselves and really turn of admissions officers. You just don't know. Don't get depressed by it... use this as a source of information and camaraderie in this whole process and leave it at that. And stay away from "What are my chances???"/"OMGOMG CAN I GET INTO HYP W/ ONLY A 2390?????" type threads. They're a waste of time. Good luck =)

thanks for the advice. i really do like the resources this site has to offer, and i'll definently steer clear from the rest of the trash on this forum :-)

also, don't look at the RSI thread. that made me sooo depressed. :)

this site is also good after standardized tests/studying for them. i remember the huge APUSH thread. and advice...yes, agree w/ previous posters on this. :)

i know...i only started recently here and boy is it addicting! i would study for sat II and then i find myself coming here cuz u know....it's sort of related...but. crazykids, im freaking out too so ur not alone. esp with all the competition at school too. everyone just seems so perfect and then i study my butt off for some decent grade. not stellar. just decent. lol. i get so stressed sometimes and then i freak out. not only do i have sats but my grade at school has to be kept up too. argh....so much to do...sigh

hahaha. at least we're not the only ones.

Not to scare you... but wait until the week before desicions go out. If I were you I wouldn't touch this site... trust me.

Not sure about the others, but I know someone this year who got into Tulane with SAT scores very close yours, and a lower weighted GPA, so you should have a eecent shot there-good luck!

How funny - people want your stats.

I was once like you, and I had a horrible, horrible consoler, who never told me about the PSAT, and who even told me that "No college in America will accept you [me]". He even purposely kept me out of honors classes (it didn't work, thankfully).

Well, that was a lie, I got accepted to several, and the one I'm going to is better than any college in America for my field!

Here is the thing- Harvard, Yale, etc. doesn't even offer my field, but when I see the "I got into ________", I still feel that tinge of what could of been. It is silly, but it is human nature.

Anybody can lie. I would not be suprised if some of the stats that have you concered are fake. My stats:

SAT- 1600
GPA 4.0 unweighted
AP's took them all, got 5's.
SAT II - took every single one, perfect scores all around.
Extracurricular - boys and girls: basketball, tennis, swimming, NHS, varsity quiz, starred in Annie, The Importance of being Earnest and Othello. Wrote school song. In key club, genealogy club, Future Axe murders of America Club. Wait, scratch that last one. :)

Just go for a job that you love. People put way too much weight on things like this sometimes. A different subject, but I watched "Friday Night Lights", Which really made me think about this - people shelving their lives on a single game, college X, what have you.

Perfect SAT scores without realising "what could of been" should be "what could have been"? :)

Crazykids, I feel you. This site makes me angry, too. You never see anyone NORMAL. Just don't let it get to you. The kids here are some sort of super teen hero freaks. There are plenty of schools for you, and you know that. There's no real extra benefit (except bragging rights, but nobody really cares) to going to friggin' Yale. :)

jaded--

Yeah I completely agree, I'm just excited to continue visiting colleges over the summer and figure out the right place for me to go. It's pretty cool thinking that one year from now i'll be packing up away from home.

where are you from? if ur from south dakota, ur golden.

i wish, virginia.

then youve got a shot at uva?

uva is really tough from out of state.

yeah, but it's also really competitive at my high school. where 20% of my class has above a 4.0

kates, my stats were written as satire. I have no idea what my stats are, I graduated from high school 4 years ago. I don't care what they were, and neither does anybody else after the minute your parents drop you off - trust me :)

You do realize that you are only contributing to the amount of unbelievably high stats on this site.... 4.3 weighted... If you had < 3.0 maybe it'd be understandable.
