"Those ECs are weak...."- So what's good?

I agree.

Thanks..

I need an EC that will boost my chances for..harvard
(im a junior)
I like business, law, english..actually just humanities in general
what should i do?

debate.

10 char

I gotta agree. As an Eagle Scout, and in the scouts, I put in a tremendous amount of time. Heavily involved. I've held almost every leaderhsip position, and personally taught at least half the current scout troop what they know. I just now got my Eagle because well...I wanted a good project. I am now an Eagle Scout. My project? I built a trail. Unfortunately other younger scouts have gotten Eagle, and all they've done is build benches. I hope colleges start to look at how many other positions and responisibilities a scout holds before they accept his Eagle as significant.

I agree- I am a girl scout and earned the girl scout silver award, which consumes at least 35 hours of community service. If building a bench gets more credit that assiting, decorating, and videotaping a bible school for a video project that I gave to the church, then something is wrong.

In addition to those 35 hours, there are prerequisites for earning the award- total, i think it's 60 hours community service.

Interact or Key Club? Which one is better?

Key Club by far. in key club you actually do stuff. try to go for a regional position

are having excellent ec's really that important in going to a good college?
im a shy high school student that is not really active in school clubs and stuff...

I'm in Interact, but the only reason I joined was because my girlfriend at the time (freshmen year) joined. But yeah, key club seems to have more stuff.

Anyways, I am an Eagle Scout, and I am wondering how much it can help, because it's one of the few things I have going for me

i was wondering...

how good does campaigning for a senator look for schools such as the ivies?
What about a mayor, assuming you can get a really good rec from him. (population of city--75k)? And by campaigning, i mean precinct walking, fundrasing, campaign meetings, etc.

whats a good EC?

POLICY DEBATE.

can this thread depress me any more ? lol

my ecs are garbage ... this hurts me for UChicago especially

What about this...

I mean my ecs are pretty much garbage, lke sealedhuman77 said. But I would totally love to "start again" and join many clubs and become actively involved in college: whether it be political clubs, cultural, TV, radio, etc. I came to the U.S. for sophomore year, and was pretty much clueless about the concept of "ECs" (so basically didn't do much during Soph. year), never knew there were things like "Honor" classes, etc etc.

I'm somewhat doing some ECs, but Im worried I might not seem like a passionate and persistent person with ECs.

Would adcoms consider the fact that I came to the US for my sophomore year, hence, know why my ECs side is weak, or is this just plain stupid excuse? (well really it was hard to settle down and take a deep breath at first.. i mean immigrating to a new country is hard.. especially in a big country like the US.)

I dunno there are a lot of people who did EC's even though they came to US during high school....

From my experience, ECs seemed to have been more just as (if not more important than) SAT scores, etc. I feel that college admissions officers look for passion, as many people have already said. Maybe they even like to see some sort of common theme or focus among your ECs (like community service, arts, environmental affairs....)

So before this thread I was fairly confident that I had done enough in high school to really stand out to college admissions. However, I am starting to really doubt this and I felt like my EC were some of my strongest part. Could someone look at my EC and tell me if they see a common trend. I know what I'm trying to highlight in my application, what I love to do. However, I don't know anymore if college admissions officials will be able to. Please help, I'm getting really worried about this.

Summer Experiences:
~Went to Association of Pakistani Physicians of North America conference and sat in on several seminars for those who have even a slight interest in medicine
~Traveled to Europe and explored many historical areas and was introduced to European cultures

Misc:
~Am fluent in three languages: English, Urdu, and Hindi (not sure if this helps at all)

Seems to me like athletics and volunteering are the common trend in your EC's. All the athletics are high endurance like football and powerlifting so it's not all over the place.

Well the main points of my EC would be exactly what you said and devotion to my religion. What I'm wondering is if my EC are looked at as good. I'm not applying to all Ivies, but more like Boston College, Wake Forest, Lehigh, those kinds of schools. So would these EC be good for those schools or would they be looking for something more like cancer research or something.
