beats me, but apparently i beat the system because when i want to, i can get to bed at 10 at night, and i still got into a good school. i basically do my varsity sport till like 5 or 6 on the weekdays, then i sometimes practice piano, usually i wing it. i have hebrew school and that seems to be about it. and i write for the paper. pretty small amount of stuff, but it all takes lots of commitment, esp track. 21 hours a week prolly.

i consider president of key club and nhs throwaways, so that leaves u with captain of a sport plus community service and some job stuff. if ure grades and standardized test scores are really good, u can get into good schools, but once again for HYPS and MIT etc its all a toss up. i'm sure they willl like all the community service but u need to win an award for something amazing as i always say to hav ea better chance of getting in. but u could still get in. i kno i did no community service at all and got into a top small LAC.

Ok i really need some input from people regarding EC's

What do people think about the strength of these EC's.

Playing a club sport, but not being a captain.
Working 100 hours at the local hospital.
Publishing 3 scientific papers (lead and co lead authoring).

How significant are these EC's, please rate out of 10.

Also how significant is a perfect SAT score.

I'm going to be volunteering at a summer camp as a Teacher's Assistant/Camp Counselor. The camp is for students k-6, basically math, science, social studies, etc. at a local college. I'm also going to be getting a stipend, so I think I can list it as a job. Is this something that would impress colleges?

What can I do to better this list:
Math league (1)
Speech and Debate (2-3) - Many awards, League Champion Dec, qualified for NCFL, NFL (in US Extemp), state championship (didn't attend NFL, parents didn't want to pay for plane ride and hotel)
Science Olympiad (1, starting next year)
Read-It-Tell-It Club (3, no club next year))
Yearbook Club (2, Assistant Editor, Layout+Design, General Staff)
Magazine Club (1, Layout+Design, General Staff)
Peer Tutor in Chemistry (1)
Library Teen Volunteer (15-20h)
Model UN (3, includes projected next year) - Honorable Mention, Outstanding Delegate
Chair in my school's Model UN simulation (all tenth graders are delegates, Juniors and seniors apply to be chairs)
Hopefully CMU Pre-college APEA this summer
....

nothing...you can't do anything...

Football 9-12
Crew 11-12
Workout Program* 9-12

Amnesty International 9-12
Math Team 10-12
National Honor Society Secretary 11-12
[Founder of] Midnight Run 11-12
Campus Ministry 11-12

Does non-competitive weightlifting count for anything? Or would it just be part of football?

I'll be applying to Duke (reach), Georgetown (reach), Notre Dame (reach/target), NYU (target), UNC (target), and the University of Michigan (target).

How are these activities in relation to the schools I'll be applying to?
Is football looked at as a good EC? How much weight does Crew really carry?

Football takes commitment and hard work, so yes. Crew probably isn't as good, but still great. ECs look okay for where you're reaching, shows long-term commitment.

Will having an extremely rigorous course-load make up for merely decent ECs?

Can anyone rate this as an EC.

Winning the thinkquest competition

Thinkquest.org

Is it worth mentioning in my app that i played class 1 club soccer for 6 years (and played in the super-y national championships one yeaR), even though I quit freshman year and never played soccer again... ?

you only mention stuff you do in high school, not before.

Well if I did actually play during freshman year, and the beginning of sophomore year, can I mention that it was 6 years prior to that, or would that seem "sketchy" ?

The reason I ask is because I've literally done almost no extracurriculars whatsoever throughout high school, unless they consider partying and attending shows to be "extracurricular" :D

What Are The Career Options After Doing Architectural Engineering And Can Anyone Tell Me Plz That After Doing Architectural Engineering What Kind Sort Of Work One Person Has To Perform ?

"Has created and organized a major service project such as getting a Habitat house built ,raising at least $10,000..."

Is $5000 in 5 weeks good enough at a school of 185? lol
( but were continuing this coming year so it'll be higher...)

Hey Ive been told on cc by several users that I have weak ec's that will hurt my chances for admision to several schools. I also, according to these users, am weak in leadership.
My ec's:
soccer 9-12
basketball 9-12
Habitat 9-12 including being the project cordinater senior year
food club 10-12
speech 10
a few summer jobs
boys state
commended national merit and my schools US history award

Before people told me my ecs were so bad, I felt fairly confident about them. Is this list really that bad? From what I heard from the admissions officers ive talked to, they arent looking for someone whos cured cancer or been published 5 times. Yet it seems many cc users have an unbelievable number of ecs (see diginetgod above). Is that whats really expected for admission to any sort of high ranking school?

I think you're perfectly fine with your ECs...definitely shows passion in everything he does.

This thread is honestly inspiring suicidal tendencies in me. The whole of CC does. It makes me not want to apply to college, because I'm already convinced I won't be accepted, and then I might as well die.

I don't do anything. I participated in Math League and Community Design Club my junior year. I've been in the county Interacademic League and Science Olympiad for two years and I'll be captain of both next year. I'm tutoring kids to play musical instruments this summer. I'm volunteering at a secondhand bookstore for the Literacy Volunteers this summer, and I can't tutor there because I don't have a high school diploma yet. I've never had a job because my mother likes to have me around the house to take care of my sister and otherwise do her bidding.

If I wanted to be inspired to apply to top universities and keep my pride, CC is the last place I would go. I come here looking for advice and find out that colleges are going to hate me. What's the use...

Er. I've since gotten over that angst. Thought I could delete posts, but I guess not. Carry on.

For those who list several leadership positions and clubs etc they are in, and then promptly say "I don't have enough EC's", then you have to see my list. FWIW it's worth I'm tired of hearing the word EC since I'm a very shy guy and don't usually interact with people unless I know them well or they're online. Heck I get nervous even talking on the phone with a stranger. My attention span is naught and every time I think of a plan, I promptly ditch it after devoting a few hours to it. I'm planning to do stuff in the 3/2 of a year that I have left before I turn in my college app though... wish me luck.

Thank you!

wxmann, I'm afraid of people and probably the vast majority of people I consider friends are ones I know online. Social anxiety plays a role into what I choose to do - and besides, the majority of ECs here ridiculously clique-ish. You have to be popular to get into Student Council/Gov't, Junior/Senior Exec, etc., and I'm not willing to play those games.

Good luck.
