I am searching for a college major that interests me, has decent amount of employment opportunities and also earn a nice salary. Surveying and mapping, which is probably the same or similar to geography, has always intrigued me. What sorts of jobs would be available and whats the market like?
For a career in surveying and mapping, you should consider geodetic or geomatic engineering. Usually, it’s a subspecialty in civil engineering. Some schools with programs include Ohio State and Purdue. Northern Illinois has a subspecialty track in the geography major. Most programs in geography departments focus on cartography and geographic information systems (GIS), which probably won’t offer very much training in surveying. Landscape Architecture and Urban and Regional Planning are other fields that might interest you, though Urban and Regional Planning often is better to pursue at the master’s level after completing an undergrad major in another relevant field.
Geography as a job outlook is a bit poor according to the BLS. Civil engineers, and urban/regional planners have better job outlooks. If you have any questions about landscape architecture you can ask me, my girlfriend graduated from cal with a BLA.
Engineering vs some of the other choices would be pretty math heavy, how are your math skills.
