I am majoring in civil engineering and am currently taking a geomatics class. I am really enjoying it, especially the lab component where we go out in the field and survey. Can you make a living as a surveyor? Do they get paid allot less than civil engineers? Is there an area of civil engineering where you would use allot of surveying? I heard transportation can use allot of surveying/GIS.

I’d like to piggyback onto your post here and ask if anybody has any additional information on this subject as well.

My S’14 is currently taking GIS classes in High School. He was originally planning to go to school for “something computer related” probably computer science. Well now he’s thinking GIS and he’s found there are a few schools that offer a major called “Geomatics Engineering” and he’s interested to hear more. He would not want to be a surveyor but more of a “guy in the office who does the computer stuff” part of GIS/Geomatics.

So please, any and all info on the subject, let’s hear it!

Geomatics engineering sounds like a civil engineer with geospatial specialization.
It’s those guys with PLS at the end of their names instead of PE.
Who hires these people? Those working in the construction industry.
What does the the state of the industry look like? bad for foreseeable future. will recover? maybe… in the next 10 years.
So if your son wants to have a hard time when finding a job in a few years from today, by all means go ahead…

My dad majored in civil engineering but he has yet to take the FE(EIT) exam certification to be considered an ‘engineer.’ His job right now is a surveyor, and he is currently making around 60k. He told me that once he passes the FE exam, he will be making around 85k
